Wow! Arlen Specter calls the Justice Department "dysfunctional."

Top Republican thinks Gonzales will resign

POSTED: 6:06 p.m. EDT, May 17, 2007

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee said Thursday that he expects the investigation into the firings of federal prosecutors will lead to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation.

"I have a sense when we finish our investigation, we may have a conclusion to the tenure of the attorney general," said Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter.

While Specter did not join the growing number of lawmakers from both parties calling for Gonzales to resign or be fired, he did call the Department of Justice "close to being dysfunctional, with an attorney general who is unable to perform the duties of that position, a deputy attorney general who is on his way out and what I sense to be considerable demoralization within the department."

Committee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy said he had "absolutely no confidence in the attorney general or his leadership."

Yes.

I am trying to recall how strongly Specter supported Gonzo's nomination as AG. IIRC, he was a proponent.

I wonder what the ratio of Republicans who supported Gonzales is compared to those who supported George Dubya in 2004? ;)

When the GOP regained the Senate majority a few years ago, they did a public kabuki about whether they could trust Specter to head the Judiciary Committee. He must have promised to be the good Bush-lackey they wanted in that important post. Hence his buckling under in every instance of controversy, even if he did make little peeps of displeasure here and there.

He's a tool and everyone knows it. His opinion is about as useful as a sand merchant at the beach.

I like that! I'm going to remember to use that when it comes to Bush's credibility about Iraq.
