In the latest SWIFT commentary at http://www.randi.org/jr/2007-05/051807.html#i6 , we hear od firewalker Trever McGhee. Twice in that commentary, he was quoted referring to himself as a "Shaman".

Now, as a World of Warcraft player, I know a thing or two about Shamans. I think I know why he wasn't able to complete his firewalk:

He should have dropped a Fire Resistance totem every 40 yards!

Of course, dropping that many totems will deplete his mana pool rather quickly, so he should take a high-end Mana Potion with him to drink when he goes OOM. If necessary, Trever should have a druid stationed next to the last half of the track, who can cast Innervate on him when his mana runs out and his potion timer is on cooldown. The druid could also cast Regrowth and a quick Rejuve on him when he runs by, because even with Fire Resistance, Trever's going to take SOME environmental fire damage from the coals and will need his health-points topped off. Success is a team effort, after all!

He should not have tried to run.
All he did was sqeze out the insulating ash layer.
Stepping sofftly and quikly is the way to go.

Still 500 ft....

Bah, what is with wasting all that mana!
He could just stack fire resist gear, problem solved!

Isn't there a maximum distance you can walk over these "red hot" coals
before they actually do start to toast your tootsies? I seem to recall that
it's around 75 feet or something like that.

Well, yeah, but since he was doing this Firewalk prior to the release of the Burning Crusade expansion (16-Jan-2007), his only source for half-decent Fire Resistance gear would have been the Dark Iron Mail set and the various Dragonscale pieces. Dark Iron Mail required an Armorsmith, and Dragonscale gear required a Dragonscale Leatherworker -- both of which had to have high Thorium Brotherhood rep to even have access to the recipes.

The only way he'd get access to people with those kinds of crafting skills is through a raiding guild. And do you think for a moment that Trever McGhee is the kind of guy who'd be welcome in a raiding guild?
