I thought trees thrived on CO2 and produced O2 why would excess co2 kill trees?

Excess O kills humans, even though we "thrive" on it.

It's more that excess CO2 when in water creates an acidic environment. I'm guessing here, as I didn't read the article.

This lake only released 1.2 cubic kilometers of CO2.
The CO2 had taken up so much space in the lake that when it was finally released 1.2 cubic kilometers of CO2—enough to fill 10 football stadiums—in as little as 20 seconds.
That's roughly the amount of CO2 generated in 2.1 million megawatt hours by a coal power plant.
