I always laugh whenever I see christians attacking Lord of the Rings and JRRT, considering how chrisitian JRRT himself was, and how many christian themes he wrapped into the books.

I think some of those other links are quite amusing, too. Apparently Caspar the Friendly Ghost is owned by Satan... :D

I think they would grab onto anything that is popular and sell books about how it is leading your kids to worship the evil dark lord. Just about anything could be construed as Not Godly.

Why do people blame Satan anyway? It's God who throws you into Hell. He's the bastard here.

Given death would be better than unending agony, which is the ultimate destination for the vast majority of people who ever lived (according to the Bible), then the fact that God exists, and rules as He does is an unmitigated disaster and pox on existence, and tragedy the order of which beggars description.

Surely the most pious of the religious must admit to this! As John Lenon said, "Imagine no heaven. No Hell below us. Above us, only sky."

Surely even the most religious would admit that would be a better state for everyone than for the terrorist Yahweh to actually exist!

I got into this in another forum with a character I came to think of as my very own pet Calvinist. He genuinely believed that damnation for the overwhelming majority of humans who have ever lived was a fair price for his own existence. His argument was, "But this is the way God set it up. Would you rather nobody got to live and go to Heaven?" And when I said yes -- that I would gladly relinquish existence, relinquish ever having had existed, in exchange for the assurance that no thinking being would be consigned to eternal torment -- he couldn't understand what I was saying.

I did manage to back him into a corner, somewhat, on the "free will" argument. At first he argued that there was no such thing as human free will -- that everything we do and think was dictated by God at the beginning of the universe. So no human being could choose to turn to God unless God had dictated that he so turn (and yet that failure to turn to God merited infinite punishment).

The problem is that there are huge numbers of people who think that they're "saved", that they're among the "elect", who -- in my interlocutor's belief -- are damned. That's where I felt the mousetrap in my mind snap shut. Okay ... so they think they're saved, but that thought did not arise by their free will, because that's a trait they don't have. God made them believe they're saved when they weren't. God made them think they would be in Heaven with him.

So ... you're saying God is a liar, then?

At this point, my interlocutor dropped out of the discussion for a couple of days, long enough for the thread to be bumped off the forum queue, and then showed up saying that he didn't know what degree of free will human beings had (except that he was still certain they did not have the capacity to turn to God unless God had chosen them to).

I'm still hoping for a chance to try and pin him down on whether God has free will or not.

The Christians have a point. I don't necessarily believe Rowling is purposefully leading children to witchcraft and satanism, but that will nevertheless be the result of her writings. Nobody stood up and protested Dr Seuss, and now we have a world full of people who dress their cats up in ridiculous f:Dking costumes. It has to stop somewhere.

Fun = Satan
Boring = God

Plain hats, for example, are Godly. Funny hats, by way of contrast, are Satanic.

Pokemon is Satanic. Sitting quietly and contemplating your inevitable damnation is Godly.

Oooh, that's an evil thing to do. Challenge the notion of the "gift of life."

Is it really the case that living is better than not living at all? This is the epitome to me as apples and oranges. Actually, it's not even close to being apples and oranges. It's more like apples and moonrocks. They are incomparable (more or less the comparison is undefined).

But as you note, religious people can't comprehend the idea that life is not necessarily a "gift."

Me too. I absolutley refused to let them have anything to do with Yugio or Digimon. Instead, last weekend I introduced them to the early work of Sam Rami and Bruce Campbell.
