I use Ohropax (http://www.ohropax.de/3-1-products.html) wax earplugs at night. I really like them but... they are quite expensive around 10$ for a pack of 12 earplugs.

I don't like the foam earplugs because they make noise when I move.

Does anybody know if it is possible to buy in large quantity this special semi-soft wax the Ohropax are made from or a similar wax ? Where can I find wax with this consistency ?

Maybe I could save some money by making my homemade earplugs.

Any suggestions ?

Thank you

I suggest you get custom made earplugs. They are relatively inexpensive and super comfortable. They will cost you around $45.00 but should last forever.

Why do you need earplugs at night?
Are you sleeping at a construction site?

During my printing days, we would often buy silicone earplugs like these (http://www.earinc.com/p1-reusable-instaputty.php) because they were cheap and fit well.

I have never been a fan of loud music, so my hearing is extremely acute . This has its drawback at night when you have neighbors. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. The silicone ones are about the same price as the ohropax. I will look for the custom made earplugs.

The solution is live somewhere so urban that any noise the neighbors make is drowned out by background noise (i.e. the street). :P

Unless noise is the reason you are awake:)

I'm just glad I'm not the only one using earplugs because any noise will keep me awake

I wasn't going to post today, but I can't resist.

there are a variety of foam earplugs.

some are more rubbery than others. I buy bottles of 50 at a time--orange ones, and I don't experience too much noise from them *except*:

the sound of my footsteps is conducted through the bones in my skull, or something, so that becomes bothersome.

and, it's even worse when I put noise-blocking headphones on top of the earplugs. Then, walking on eggshells becomes thunderous.

but it's better than the sounds of the world. Brookline, Mass. is a bad situation--people with lots of money to hire people to do their lawns--I see lawn-mowers nearly the size of some people's yards.

The Bose noise-cancelling headphones simply don't work that well--not enough noise reduction.

The wax earplugs are itchy and they sometimes get stuck in your ears--in my experience.

Problem with headphones--you can't sleep on your side comfortably.

I feel your pain, nimzov.

the other day, I went out and congratulated some lawn-care people for using a quieter type of leaf-blower. it took a few tries to convince the guy I didn't want to harm him.

I ended up saying: "Is good. no noise! good. not too bad. ya, ya. really good!"--bobbing my head and smiling like an idiot.

The solution is live somewhere so urban that any noise the neighbors make is drowned out by background noise (i.e. the street). :PActually, white noise or my favorite, the sound of a small indoor waterfall is my favorite. (You have to hunt for one with a quiet pump and they splash a tiny amount so you need the right spot in your house for one.) The natural sound of running water does a great job of covering the sounds of the city. If you can't go with the live water, there are many recorded options that play on a loop.

On another note, I hope your smoke alarm would still wake you with those earplugs in.
