View Full Version : Randi's Japanese spot

Gib

Randi says he's going to be in Japan shooting an investigation, that's going to be shown in Japan very soon.

I'm sure that a version will appear on youtube soon that I can watch, but my girlfriend lives in Japan and I want to tell her when and where it will be on live.

So, anyone know the channel and date/time his segment will be shown ?

I did a quick search of Japanese TV listings, but I could not find anything. I didn't see anything in Randi's latest commentary. Where did you hear this information?

Welcome to the forum. :D

It'll air on Monday, the 18th on (I think) Channel 4 at 10 pm (Nihon television).

The program is called GetsuYoru.

Thanks! I'll try to remember to tune in!

Most of the commercial (non-NHK) TV stations here generally provide an uncritical platform for psychics and the like, and promote lots of silliness including blood-type personality theory and fortune telling based on blood type. I usually mostly watch NHK.

Ah, blood type. Of all the white supremacist Nazi propaganda pseudo-scientific ideas, I'm glad that's the one that made it to the Far East.

Thanks Loon for the info, I'll tell her to tune in then.

Thanks Puppycow for the welcome. It's good to un-lurk. Randi commented on the Japan segment not in the commentary that appeared today (well maybe, I haven't read it yet), but he did comment in the last two.. Just bring up the archives and search for "Japan".

This is (horribly) BabbelFished from the GetsuYoru web site for their next broadcast:

If "super power" is proven! Super power challenge of prize gold 1 hundred million 2000 ten thousand Yen dreams "On this earth, genuine super power how it does not exist.... " So the man whom you boast is in Florida. The leader of the magic boundary where the name widely is known the magician as "アメージング plays numerous large escaping イリュージョン in America ランディ" who, knows the trick of the magic and exhausts. And, the man whom now the psychics in the world fear... "super power bus tar" ジェームス ランディ Before itself eye, to prove super power it was possible that man, if approximately XXYEN 120, 000 and 000 (approximately $ 1, 000 and 000 (1000000 U.S. dollars) to a = Japanese Yen,: 120000000 Yen) you present. With you say! For the psychic, by proud super power, it is the story like dream of a catching lot of money, but! There was a fact of impact here! ! ! That calls secret ・ ・ ・ ランディ of super power, there is a trick "in everything of super power. " 1000000 dollar super power challenge complete document! Exhibiting spirit perspective man VS super power bus tar super power! With the man and the super power etc. which are said it does not exist! With it can unfold, the exciting battle of the man who is said.

ETA: Hazarding a guess based on my very limited knowledge of Katakana (and the slight help of Rikaichan) the untranslated bits are James and Randi, with the exception of the second untranslated word which is "illusion." My favorite is, what seems to be, Randi's new title, "Super Power Bus Tar" (buster).

If "supernatural power" is proved Supernatural power challenge of prize money the dream of 120 million yen! "... which does not exist in real supernatural power on this earth." The man who brags so is in Florida. Magician who performed many large escape illusion in the United States "Amazing Randy" He is the leader of a magic community who it carries out, and the name is known widely, and got to know all the tricks of magic. And man whom the persons with preternatural power in the world fear now ... "Supernatural power buster" James Randy The man will be $1,000,000 = (1 million U.S. dollar), if supernatural power is able to be proved in front of own Sakka. It is made the Japanese yen and \120,000,000 (abbreviation: 120 million yen) is presented about. It says! For a person with preternatural power, it is the supernatural power of boast and is a dreamlike talk of making a fortune at a stroke! Here was the fact of the shock!!! It is a secret of supernatural power... Randy says. "A trick is in all the supernatural power." 1 million-dollar supernatural power challenge perfect document! The exciting battle of the man ! which displays spirit-of-a-departed-person fluoroscopy man VS supernatural power buster supernatural power, and the man ! which does not exist [ supernatural power ] is under way.

So says @nifty. "...spirit-of-a-departed-person fluoroscopy man..."? That would be the applicant. But I like Babelfish's (Systrans) copy too, always good for a giggle.

Here was the fact of the shock!!! I got to sit in on the taping, despite my nihongo incompetance. Will be interesting to see how the thing gets cut up.

They started with a few clips of previous debunkings, captioned with a big KO every time Randi busts someone. Then, a clip of Randi breaking a spoon, with Randi's voice dubbed over into Japanese...

Then a profile of the challenger, complete with dramatic shots of tai-chi performed in a wooded setting...

I'm gonna go watch the rest now.

Robaato
18th June 2007, 07:32 AM
First commercial break.

The first segments were a profile of Randi, with footage of some guy blowing phonebook pages, and the Korean "Human Magnet". Brief interview w. Randi.

Then, a profile of the challenger, with some taped demonstrations of his spirit communication powers -- basically the drawing-in-a-sealed envelope trick.

Challenger enters. Commercial break.

After the break, the taped demo is repeated several times with kanji instead of drawings. This was done 4 times, apparently; they gave him credit for matches with 三 and 月, but the other two were not. (the matches were iffy, in my opinion)

Return to the studio, where Randi explains how people generally tend to draw the same things in these demonstrations.

And now it begins...Randi hauls out 20 sealed envelopes. Inside of each envelope is a photo or drawing. Copies of all the pictures are on display above the rack holding the envelopes. Randi explains that five out of 20 correctly determined pictures is the desired result. The challenger looks a little nervous.

Michael picks an envelope...concentrates...looks behind him at the pictures on display, and writes RABBIT on the envelope.

etc...

cut to archival footage of various mentalists doing their thing.

and...second CM break.

Robaato
18th June 2007, 07:39 AM
They actually have a pile of money sitting in the studio...

It's amusing how they've dimmed the lighting on stage for this. They do a few dramatic shots of Randi, hands clasped before him...

And now, as they wait for the challenger to finish, they show clips of various magicians and such. Now they're showing a clip from the movie RINGU.

Now old photos of biorhythm experiments? Much laughter from the crowd.

Back to the "live" shot. He's more than halfway through...

no, wait, he's finished. 9 minutes, 34 seconds to do 20 envelopes.

Robaato
18th June 2007, 07:42 AM
the Dramatic Reveal:

One of the show's hosts will pick and open envelopes one at a time.

envelope 1. Guess: Apple. Actual: Apple.

Commercial break, darnit!

Robaato
18th June 2007, 07:49 AM
As is typical in Japanese reality shows, they back up a bit.

1. Guess: Rabbit. Result: pliers.
2. Automobile. Beer.
3. Zebra. Drum.
4. Apple. Apple. (applause)
5. Playing card. Policeman.
6. Pliers. Tennis Racket.
7. Calculator. Rocket.
8. Pencil. Playing card.

At this point, they cut away. The final result appears to be one right out of 20. Michael expresses surprise and disappointment. Randi has the final word...

Commercial break. Koda Kumi (Japan's answer to Janet Jackson) is touring, sponsored by Sanyo...

Robaato
18th June 2007, 07:52 AM
final bit: A visiting expert is checking that the envelopes were lined with black paper, to prevent see through.

Randi mentions that he's "ready to come back [to Japan] any time you want.

End credits.

Sorry that I'm too tired to analyzing the Japanese being spoken; and perhaps I should leave that to those better at it than I.

'night!

Both Randi and Maggio (?) were dubbed the whole time.

One of the more amusing moments for me was when Randi was explaining how when asked to draw a random picture, they often draw a house or a car...and I realized that when Maggio was "getting" the image of a house, he drew what he thought a Japanese house would look like. A doubled, Zen-temple like roof...

For the record, when Japanese people draw houses, it looks similar to when Americans draw houses.

So, Randi's recent excursion to Japan hasn't produced any youtube videos of the event as far as I can tell.
Is there anywhere I can view the segment ?

A related question is how to search for videos of Randi on youtube ? Whenever I type "randi", either with or without the quotes on youtube, I get a bucket load of videos that mention the name "randy". How the hell to you get youtube to stop "helping" by "correcting" the name to "randy" ?

A search for randi found lots of videos of James Randi.

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=randi&search=

But a search for Japan + randi makes it autocorrect to 'randy'.

You're right, youtube is definitely 'helping'.... :boggled:

ok, search for:

japan + randi -randy

then you don't get all the 'randy' hits.
