NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose on Monday, with the Dow Jones industrial average ending on a 14-month high, as rosy news from big retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc. bolstered investors' hopes that the economy and corporate profits are improving.

6 years into Clinton's presidency a number of economists were talking about a "new" economy. There was a new paradigm. Well we all found out that was bogus and the naysayers were right. There was no "new" economy just an extension of the then current up cycle due in part to the very real market growth of computer sales due to the internet and the very FAKE market growth of dot coms also due to the internet. (also some ver real accounting practices that faked the bottom line to keep the stocks selling.)
These experts that had said all along that there was going to be a correction also said that the correction was going to have to be larger to make up for the "faux" increase. The good news is that we did not tank as bad as we could have. Hopefully we are on our way up. The fact is that we have had good news before only for it to be dashed on the rocks of other bad news.
Many economists believed that the end of the hostilities in Iraq was going to send the market significantly higher.
We will see if this current uptick will hold.

I think that NTW is trying to suggest that this is due to the policies of Dubya and the Republicans, and ignore the fact that this is precisely what always happens after a `successful' war or foreign campaign.

Is the Dow Jones a proxy for the real economy? I don't think so.

Naah, nothing that sophisticated, just a lame attempt at responding to "it's the economy, stupid".
And until the unemployment rate drops, "it's the economy, stupid".
Then again, the inflation that this burst is likely to fuel may create some concerns about the economy, too, especially given that energy rates are sitting up there now.

Technically no, but loosely yes. But either way, the DJI average is irrelevant to investors. Unless they happen to own that index fund.
