I can totally understand how big heavy things falling can be misinterpreted as explosions. About twelve years ago a guy I used to work with was trying to lift a 3,000 lb block of steel with a magnet rated for 1,000 lbs. He successfully got it in the air and over the table of the boring mill on which he was working, where the magnet let go. The block fell at most 8" onto a steel table but it sounded like a bomb going off. My ears rang for the next hour.
