MY mailboxes runneth over with spam and its time to stop it.

I did a Google search, and found
http://www.softandco.com/Internet/E-mail/c/83/a/8959/Outlook%20Spam%20Filter.html
I don't know if it is any good or not, since I don't use Outlook.

I use SAProxy on my home system. The nice thing about SAProxy is that it sits between your email client and the internet. Thus it works with any email client. (It runs on your computer.)
http://saproxy.bloomba.com/docs/
SAProxy uses the SpamAssassin engine.

I have 2 email addresses - one for friends, the other for when I have to register a product or buy something online. I only get spam on the second one, so it's easy to manage.

I never publish 1 of my 4 email addresses but still get spam. One of their tricks is to basically start at a@isp.address and keep going to zzzzzzzz@isp.address. They use non-delivery reports from the isp's mail system to tune their lists.
I also never ever use Outlook as my email cient. Too many reports of holes being blown in system integrity by the Outlook developers adding "feechurs". Have a look at Eudora.

My ISP (sti.net) eats SPAM for me on the back-end. Every so often it sends me an email that says I got (heaps of) spam, and would I like to sift through it.
I just delete the one email, every so often.
It also eats suspected viruses.
Naturally, you can always poke around for addresses that look important, and safely inspect the contents of emails that are suspected to be infected.
Kind of nice, really.

Spammer ducks for cover as details published on web
A New Zealander who sent millions of junk emails out every day has shut his business after his personal details were posted on the web.
Shane Atkinson - whose business is known as spamming - said the barrage of abuse made him worry about the safety of his children.

I'm getting viral SPAM. I am receiving a lot of messages today from Scandinavia informing me that my e-mail messages to various addresses in Scandinavia have not been delivered because they were found to contain worms, especially sobig.f. I really doubt that I'm infected because I do my e-mail on a Linux box, so somebody's infected machine must be spoofing my address.

it seems as though someone is 'spoofing' my address, too. How can I stop it? Does anyone know?

Just get a domain. Easy answer. Filter messages in your email app according to user name before domain.

There is nothing you can do about someone spoofing your address. If I knew your address, I could send an email now using my own SMTP client that make it look as if it was sent from you. SMTP identity security is zero.

You do know not to put your email address in messageboard posts or in guestbooks, don't you? (419 scammers, in particular, love guestbooks).

Yes, I use a fictitious e-mail address for those. I do have to use my real e-mail address on my work-related web site.

Changing email address was the ticket for me. It wasn't intentional, a by-product of ISP ownership change. But I now no longer get any spam .. at all.

I do run my own domain, and I now get spam to it. I'm going to have to install as many RBLs as I can....

For those having so much trouble with Spam, try this:
One can of SPAM (in small cubes)
One small can of tomato sauce
One can of whole kernel (drained)
a pinch of black pepper
Put all together in a small saucepan, heat until boiling
let it stand for a minute and serve with crackers. Good
source of fiber, vitamin C and protein!

Ihave my own domain as well, and I was receiving anywhere form 50 up to 150 spam messages a day.
When SoBig(f) hit I was slammed with about 250 messages a day.
So I changed my web page mailto: link to read myname@nospam.mydomain.com and put a large message telling folks to remove the nospam if they wanted to email me.
That was Tuesday. From Wednesday morning until today I have received no viruses, and my spam has been cut down to three or so a day.
And those I bounce using mailwasher (http://www.mailwasher.net)

The latest SoBig and some mutations of Klez use a different name in the infected computer's address book as it's From: address. So someone who has your EMail address in their address book has the virus and it is sending it out under your name.
SOMETIMES you can trace it back, if you can get a full copy of the email with all the headers intact. The References: header should at least get you to the ISP, if not the exact IP address of the sender, which, coupled with the date and time of the EMail, should tell them exactly who it's from. Or, if they're good enough to put in the X-Sender: header, you'll be able to get their account's primary EMail address.

Download IHateSpam from Sunbelt Software. (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/index.htm) It works especially well with Outlook.

Just create "rules" from the message in Outlook...
Then check the box that says "Do not download from server"
Let them deal with it....
I rarely get spam....maybe one a week...

It does... but when I used to use it, one of the things it did was send an email to abuse@domain. With these new fangled Klez and SoBig things spoofing addresses, I'm wondering if IHateSpam might just be causing trouble for an innocent person upstream.
