It does get a little disappointing, to be able to say "oh, I saw what he did there." and "that wasn't very fluid" even when you couldn't do the trick to save your life..

Not in the version I am familiar with. The magician shows five cards and you choose one. She removes one card and shows you the one you picked is gone. She replaces the missing card and shows you your card is back.

My understanding is that there are several versions of the trick. One set of variations uses ordinary playing cards and a little sleight-of-hand. Another set of variations uses gaffed cards.
