"SOUTH AFRICA BACK IN THE WOO-WOO NEWS"
We are told that a South African teenager is receiving "visions of Virgin Mary" by staring at the sun. These claims have inspired another woman to stare at the sun so long that her sight was seriously damaged.
Randi comments:
"When will South Africa finally decide to join the rest of the rational world…?"
A rational world? Very interesting, where is this place?

Before we jump to conclusions on her being blinded by the sun. She is in South Africa. Was she on the Bethke list ?

I note that, according to the SWIFT article, the teen-age girl who says she can see the Virgin Mary in the sun also says she can see the sun spinning.
In truth, the sun does spin -- once around on its axis every 28 days. I doubt that that was what she was seeing, though.

When I was in first grade, I used to stare at the sun during fire drills to get those spots of color, I think they're called sunspots.
I believe it was my friend that put me up to it cause she told me about some stuff that's suppossed to happen when you stare into the sun, don' even remember what.

...so, did you use your peripheral vision to type that?

Ha.
I was born with a cataract and was diagnosed with astigmatism at a very young age. Not to mention just poor vision. I had been wearing glasses since 6 and a half- but don't I imagine it helped any.

I was talking to someone at a science museum recently about people who stared into the sun. Aparently, there have been sunspots that were visible to the eye. The person went on to remark about how there are records in China about how a giant chicken pecked a hole in the sun. Turns out it was a sunspot.

Ha?
Why wouldn't glasses help your astigmatism? - did you leave the cataract in?
Not to mention just poor vision.
But you did.
You said you had a cataract and astigmatism.
That equals poor vision doesn't it?

Given this country's curious stance on HIV/AIDS in the past, the officially recommended treatment for cauterised retinae will no doubt be a diet consisting principally of carrots.
