Anyone have any experience with this in Windows 2000? Its sort of like the blue screen of death but the computer wont restart in safe or any other mode.

Any clues would be appreciated.

You can always do a re-install quite safely.

Was this after an SP3 update?

I frequently had this problem with AOL although my system is windows ME. I changed to a cable company a few months back and I have not had the dreaded blue screen since

That is a kernel/hal mismatch STOP.

If you recently applied a patch that upgraded ntoskrnl or ntdll.dll.:
boot into recovery console
browse to the $NtUninstall directory for the fix
rename the offending file
copy the file from its uninstall directory to \winnt\system32
try to boot the machine.
