View Full Version : Is this real?

This fish, if it is real is really scary looking and I would hate to come across it in any diving expedition. So can anyone confirm that this isn't some new viral marketing for a new video game much like all the videos of discovered monster relics.

It would be great if you did more research on this, since you dive and all that. Maybe you could post back on what you find out.

Here's a link to get you started (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Haniver)

thanks for the link. It looks alot like that Jenny Haniver but not dried out or anything. And, sorry I wasn't clear but I don't do any diving (hard to here in Texas) but I should have said, if I were a diver i would probably soil myself.

Looks a lot like an Atlantic Guitarfish to me.

Since I can't post links this is the best I can do.

They have a great photo on this page that looks exactly like it. :)

Apparently in the video they only show the underside of the fish. Had they done the top it would have been a bit more obvious what it was.

its amazing what lurks below. Some creatures are really scary and very alien like.New species are discovered all the time in our oceans and seas.It seems the deeper we go the more strange the sea-creatures are.

I reckon Flesh is right. Look at this - http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/gallery/descript/AtlanticGfish/gfishhead.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Gallery/Descript/AtlanticGFish/AtlanticGFish.html&h=500&w=369&sz=64&hl=en&start=1&sig2=tgH7HpbeIZYx4KfCo5xwZg&um=1&tbnid=6vZ63rFBBQ4nZM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=96&ei=22CBRpPTBpKK0wTDx73KAw&prev=/images%3Fq%3DAtlantic%2BGuitarfish%2B%26ndsp%3D20% 26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa% 3DN

Irefer specifically to the upside down fish..............

It does look freaky, but if you encountered it in the wild, you wouldn't see it like that. It's actually kind of cute in this picture (http://www.arkive.org/species/GES/fish/Rhina_ancylostoma/GES020966.html). And apparently it's a bottom feeder, so you'd have nothing to fear...except fear itself. ;)

I got a kick out of the accompanying text:

it frightened the public so much that a 3 day public holiday was announced for people to pray.Somehow, I doubt that made the fish go away. Could there have been a more pragmatic reason for declaring a spontaneous holiday?

ETA: Thanks for ejumacating us, Flesh, and with just your first post. :)

Yes, it's real. It's simply a ray viewed ventral side up.

That's a common mistake of mine. At least "your" is an actual word. :)

Now define "ejumacating". ;)

No, no, no, compulsive proofreading is a sign of high intelligence. I should know. :p

Actually, it looks a LOT like those photos that show up in the Weekly World News and other supermarket tabloids. The headline is usually a variation on, "Woman Gives Birth to Alien Baby Nine Months After Being Abducted by Hovering UFO."

I wouldn't mind so much about being misunderstood, but that whole "unwashed" fad has got to go!

If only it was but a fad. For too long--since the beginning of time, I suspect--people have been butchering the English language and neglecting to wash up afterwards. Woe is us...:cry1
