Got a problem with my CD player.
When I would put a game CD in, it won't recognise it. It'll spin and the light'll go on, but then it'll just sit. The computer won't even recognise that there's a CD in there.
So, what do you think? Drivers? The player itself?

Is this a PC? A Mac? Running Windows? Linux?
What have you already tried?
Did it use to work, then just stopped?
Cheers,
Rat.

I have tried two CDs so far. Three, if you count the fact that Sim City 4 comes with two CDs. Both are game CDs.

Windows XP on Compaq Presario w/AMD Athlon 1.67 GHz processor.

I've rebooted a few times since the problem has started. Fortunately, I have a CD burner right below it that is still usable<sp?>. It's still under warranty, otherwise I would have started to mess around with it.

Yup. It was working fine till one day a week or so ago I tried to play SC4 and it scanned the CD and then nothing. Computer wouldn't even recognise it in that drive.

Did you power all the way down when you rebooted? I mean literally pull the plug if your power supply doesn't have a real switch. If the drive itself is confused, rebooting the OS won't necessarily clear it.

Swap the IDE cables and power cables with the working drive (swap master/slave if necessary). Does it work now, and does the other? If it now works, replace the ide cable, if not, you can look for firmware/driver updates, but that's clutching at straws.
Uninstall and reinstall it in device manager.
If it still doesn't work, hope it's still in warranty.

Rat.

I don't want to open it up myself until the warranty is up. The CD burner works for now so I think I'll wait until late next month and take it to Best Buy and have them fix it.

My guess is that the laser has gone in it.
