I personally get a good laugh at the expense of Penta and anyone who buys it. They claim to have created a better distilled water, and they try to validate the choice to buy Penta by using some weak research studies. Anyone else read about this stuff before?

Oi! Great thing to make fun of. Search Randi's commentray archives for Penta and see what you get.

Yes, this has been discussed. See here: http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11343&highlight=Penta

I know someone else who's bound to have something to say on this topic.

It's interesting that they infer you find all these nasty things in tapwater just because there are designated 'safe' limits for them. It's also interesting that people who sell so-called pure water never tell you that consuming their product may increase your risk of heart disease (lack of calcium in soft water is associated with increased cardiac disease, whereas those of us lucky enough to drink hard water are less prone) and expose the cells of your gut to osmotic damage. There may even be other side effects - it's not really known.

They're all great scams though, eh? Selling water... oh wait, it's stabilised water. Riiiiiight!

Plus, soft water doesn't even taste like anything! Ick! And it won't get the soap off me. Double Ick! My hydrogeology professor and I had a good laugh about Penta when it came out, btw. It's just so very, very absurd. Sorta sad that people buy it, but still.

Yes, "Penta Water" is more than just "purified water". It has several additional layers of woo-woo bull on top of that.
If you look at the label it says, among other things: "Ingredients: water, medicinal grade oxygen." :D

Just don't mistakenly buy any of that di-hydrogen oxide! That stuff can kill you.

1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. it is a major component in acid rain
3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. accidental inhalation can kill you
5. it contributes to erosion
6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients.

But you're forgetting all the beneficial uses of hydrogen hydroxide! (outright stolen from Friends of Hydrogen Hydroxide (http://www.armory.com/~crisper/DHMO/))

Hydrogen hydroxide is beneficial!
It has been shown that hydrogen hydroxide enhances the functionality, growth, and health of many forms of life-- including humans!-- and current research suggests that it has become an integral part of our planet's ecological balance.

Hydrogen hydroxide is environmentally safe!
Opponents of dihydrogen monoxide would have you believe that it is some kind of uber-toxin, that it wreaks caustic terror on anything it touches. This couldn't be farther from the truth; when handled properly, it enhances nature rather than destroys it, and even a worst-case scenario DHMO accident would be a trifle for the natural cycles of our world to handle.

Ack! Sorry that I didn't search the archives first. I just got a huge kick out of it when I stumbled across the Penta website. Thanks for the reference.

Hydrogen hydroxide is beneficial! Just as long as you dont take it internally!

I'm coming out with a new product soon: Hexa Water. It's 20% better than Penta Water.

Wanna buy stock?

And it won't get the soap off me.There are some people who prefer to bathe in soft water. I had a disagreement with someone once who claimed that hard water won't get you clean, because it leaves your skin all squeaky. He thought that the slick feeling was just your skin. I disagreed and said that the slick feeling was soapy skin, and that clean skin is squeaky, like a sheet of rubber would be squeaky. We never really resolved it, but I think it's a common viewpoint for people who grew up with soft water.

One of the consequences of using a water softener may be that the salty water (sodium is exchanged for the calcium that makes water hard) discharged to the ground via septic systems then proceeds to exchange with naturally-occurring radium in aquifer media (in some places), which is then transported with water pumped out of a well. (Higher dissolved radium has been associated with higher dissolved sodium in ground water in some areas).
