View Full Version : Crossing Out "In God We Trust"

With all this Alabama ten commandments hullabaloo, I've been thinking about taking up the practice of crossing out the "In God We Trust" on my currency.
Does anyone else do this? What kind of experiences have you had?
The legality of it seems unclear. Anyone have an opinion.
I don't want to do anything illegal because unlike a certain Alabama judge, I try to respect the law of the land.

Thatd be ilegal caue you dont own the money. Its govt property.
This 'bama thingis the reason why people try to get "under God" out of things. Cause the kokky other side will use it as justification to push religion into govt. Which is happening right now.

I don't like it there, but I don't cross it out. I don't see how that could possibly accomplish anything.

There are probably more rational things you can do.

Thanks, I wasn't able to find this topic by searching.

Blacking out those words (I usually just mark out "In God" and leave "We Trust") does not make the bill unfit for circulation.

Hey, at least you don't have the Queen of England on your money.

I have heard some say that crossing it out would cause the bills to not be readable by vending machines. etc. Anyone know if this is true.
If so, would that be considered making it unfit?

That is not true. If you look over your money you will see all sorts of markings on bills. Some are from "counterfeit detection pens". some are phone numbers. Some from people wiping their a**.

Why not just smear dirt or heavy on clay on the "in god we trust bit"? I did that with the Queen Elizabeth on our five dollar bills in OZ and if the Monarchists did not like it they could wash it off, so no one could accuse me of permanently defacing it.
Your could even try smearing feces on it.

Queen of Canada, Queen of England, Queen of Australia. It's all the same thing.

I don't regularly deface currency myself, but have been known to put pro-revolution messages on the old paper notes (they're plastic now... damn government will do anything to stop the revolution!). No-one ever asked about it, but if they did, they'd have to prove it was me who did it.
Agitating is healthy. Show the world you aren't a robot. Cross out 'In God We (sic) Trust' today.

IMO "GOD" is such an ambiguous word, you can just as easily interpred it as an abstract concept like the:
Greatness
Of
Democracy.
we trust.
or
the:
Great
Omnipotant
Dollar
we trust.

"In God We Trust"
I really like that phrase even though I am not a believer in any god (just some vague force). I don't know why though. I guess I just don't let it get to me, mainly because it is just printed on chunks of metal or pieces of paper, and in that form, is probably not used for evangelism purposes.
I've heard that some people add an extra "o" to God to get Good.

Yes, crossing out the "In God We Trust" on dollar bills seems petty and ultimately pointless. However, for those who are so inclined, I've just this instant thought up an equally petty and pointless way of making a "statement" by defacing a dollar bill.
On the back, you'll find the obverse and reverse of the Great Seal of the United States. On the reverse is an eagle with a shield (with 13 stripes), carrying 13 arrows in one claw and an olive branch (with 13 leaves and 13 olives) in the other - this signifies America's ability to commit to war or peace. If you're rabidly anti-war, take a marker and scribble out the arrows! What fun! What frivolity! Pass the money around and find out how many people notice, much less give a damn.
