There is a winning strategy based on passed numbers drawn. It is to predict which numbers will be chosen least in the next drawing. This will maximize the payoff in "match some" lotteries with shared prizes.

Nope.. All the numbers have exactly the same chance of being drawn in the next weeks lottery, prior lottery draws have absolutely no influence on them.

Best bet to "win" at a lottery is to pick numbers that havent been selected as much by other players to get a bigger share out of the winnings, but if you try to do it through some system (That is used by other people as well) it will probably fail.

No, ted. You described a system based on past drawings. Trollbane suggested a system based upon the knowledge of the distribution of numbers chosen for the current drawing (assuming that information could be had) that would tend to decrease one's chances of having to split the jackpot if one won the lottery.

The only statistic available on who chooses what for the UK lottery is the number of jackpot winners each week. Some bright sparks at one of the Universities used this to work out what people are probably picking.

And if you want to know about lottery prediction, just ask Lucianarchy. He has claimed (in the dim and distant past) that he can predict lottery numbers, but that any kind of test of this would break his magik powers :rolleyes:

But I wouldn't bother asking him - he's repeatedly ignored any recent questions about it.

If you do not pick numbers based on PAST DRAWINGS , How are you going to minimize the probability of sharing a prize ????? Asking the lottery what numbers have been picked for the next drawing is not an option.

If you want to reduce your chances of splitting the jackpot if you win, I would suggest selecting numbers larger than 31 since many people use birthdays to make their selections.

So, according to BobK, in my own words, repeated:

Except I think some of you (Trollbane) are confused by my use of the word "chosen".. I mean chosen by the players in the next drawing, not chosen by the drawing machine.

I would also add to the word "drawn" the data regarding payoffs for those numbers.

I am assuming BobK's information could be obtained by analyzing winning numbers and is not based on asking everyone what numbers they play.

I would like to clarify my suggestion.

Selecting numbers greater than 31 does not improve your chances of being a winner, but it does have the potential to increase the amount of money won for any prize that is split among players with the same number combination. Less duplicate winners due to lower numbers getting more play.

In my case, I only play the lottery when the jackpot hasn't been won for several drawings and then, given the poor odds on winning, its not worth my time to select my own numbers, I just buy two quick picks.:)

ANd to continue clarifying, by "winning", I mean increase payoff to entry ratio, not increase probabability of claiming a jackpot.
