Just saw this article, about a new assessment of Al Qaida capabilities.

Given recent events in the UK - Glasgow Airport for one - and the Pakistani government's willingness to attack and kill militants at the Red Mosque, this intelligence-summary-from-anonymous-sources doesn't sound utterly convincing. If the best AQ can manage after their extensive re-structuring and re-training is an Iraqi doctor who sets himself alight whilst crashing his car and failing to kill anyone - then they have a long way to go.

Al Qaeda in Iraq... Not really anything to do with Al Qaeda, just a letter of support from Osama. The Scotland attack kinda sucks the wind out of the fighting them there so they don't fight us here argument (unless you count Scotland as "there").

It was always a dumb argument, since no terrorist is obliged to fight the battle on the ground of our choosing. That's one of the tactical advantages of terrorism, you pick a place to strike that you think is suitable, your opponent's druthers be damned.

Didn`t the main doctor in the plot have AQ connections and had just came from Iraq a few years back?

Claims to have a AQ connection after the fact, and yes he is from Iraq. There is no evidence that he received any support from Al Qeada (as is true with many of the recent Al Queda spin offs). An example of how our involvement in Iraq has lead to a more dangerous world and an increase in terrorists.
We should have stayed on point, going after Al Qeada, and never gotten involved in Iraq.

Yeah...like they took a poll and went door to door in the middle east and asked "Hey are there any new terrorist here...why did you become a terrorist?..Oh the Iraq war!". What a crock...they were trying to kill us in the 90`s and finally got the big hit in 2001..terrorist don`t need an excuse to try and kill us.
Oh.. by the way how come you didn`t mention the other war ...Afghanistan. You think that fueled the terrorist number too...think we should leave that place too?

Car bomb suspect visited al-Qa'eda's heartland

At least one of the alleged plotters of the London and Glasgow car bombings had spent time in Pakistan, it emerged yesterday.
Kafeel Ahmed: Car bomb suspect had visited al-Qa'eda's heartland
The information suggests that the leaders of the gang may have been seeking approval from al-Qa'eda before going ahead with their plan.
The main figures in other plots, including the July 7 2005 suicide bombers, the fertiliser gang and the "gas limo" terrorists all visited al-Qa'eda leaders in Pakistan before finalising their plans.
It is likely the car bomb plot was inspired by attacks in Iraq but needed clearance from the Pakistan cells before it was sanctioned by al-Qa'eda
