I couldn't resist posting this even though I do not really have any questions about it! If anyone has any comments, for or against, I would be interested to hear. I have been trying to find a flat screen that can be set at eye height for ages as there was no point in putting it on a box - I might just as well stick with the 17" CRT monitor on box. However, a friend noticed this one in a local shop and I had it delivered and plugged in yesterday, after checking with Dolphin that it was okay to use with Supernova.

It looks so elegant on my desk here! Cost was 1p change from £300 which seems reasonable.

1) For or against making the post or for or against the monitor? Since you seem to already have it on your desk, would it now matter what anyone had to say?

2) I don't understand the eye height problem nor do I understand how the LCD in the link helps with that problem. It looks just like every other LCD monitor that I have seen.

3) Dolphin? Supernova? Is anyone suposed to understand what that last bit is about?

Very good programs that allow zooming of the screen in any app for the partially sighted.

Many of the cheaper monitors aren't height-adjustable; presumably this one is. Though £300 seems a bit expensive.

The one I bought was too tall even at its lowest point. It has to sit on a raised portion of my computer desk. I even thought about cutting a hole in the desk or cutting off the post and building my own, shorter one.

I finally realized the screen can rotate on the post. I simply turned it 90 degrees and set it down that way. The post sticks off to the side but at least the screen is at eye level now.

1. I hadn't thought of ' for or against the post'! I would not send the monitor back if unfavourable comments were made, but I am always interested in comments from people who understand the technical side of computers.
2. It would have been more sensible, I agree, to mention that my ability to see the screen is limited to the periphery on right side (which is why I need the screen very close and eye height); however I don't like 'going on' about it! Dolphin recommended against flat screens until quite recently because apparently the edges of the screen were more difficult to see than with a CRT monitor. I do not understand LCD, but the picture is definitely clearer.
3. DolphinUK produce the software for those with impaired vision. One of their biggest advantages is that their technical support is not only in England but is only for owners of their products. I bought the whole set-up from them and they load everything on in a way that is suitable for the customer. I think they are wonderful!Jaws and WindowEyes are very good I undrstand, but do not themselves include magnification.

This week I have been to the annual exhibition of such equipment - amazing what is now available and which will enable young blind people to have superb access to the internet etc.

Thanks for the comment about the cost - I have not priced others, as they would have had to stand on something, which would not have looked so smart!

When and where did you buy it may I ask? Perhaps you could raise the height of the chair?!
By the way, am I seeing correctly that your avatar sort of twinkles a bit every now and then?

I occasionally use Virtual Magnifying Glass. It's free and convenient for occasional use.

Anyone know of a magnifier that doesn't follow the cursor? Most magnifiers assume you want to magnify the thing you are reading or typing now. I want to be able to magnify selected portions of some reference manual on my secondary monitor while I work elsewhere on the screen. So, basically, I want a magnfier that moves like a normal window: It stays where you put it until you grab it's title bar and move it. Would also be nice if it sized like a normal window rather than having to select from a list of predefined sizes.

I've got three of these on my desk! Well nearly; the square 1280 x 1024 kind (XA7-19i). Very nice - expensive, but glass-fronted.

Ah, that would account for it; a high-quality glass screen does cost quite a bit more than the typical plastic film one.

I did not pick up a list of all the exhibitors at the Sight Village exhibition, but there just might be something suitable amongst the wide range of magnification equipment there.

If I raise the chair then the desk part with the keyboard is too low. It's a two-tier desk.

Yes, I recently experimented with my avatar. It's still the bouncing blue alien, just made out of a random-dot silhouette. I didn't quite get what I was going for yet.

What were you going for alfaniner? Something that will program near color blind epileptics to become programmed killers? That could be seriously annoying to some people. In other words, I like it. I may tile it to be my next screen saver. I came across your previous avatar at ytmnd a couple years ago and used it as desktop wallpaper at work for a long time. Drove some people crazy.

Thanks for the link Susan.

Well, I may shortly go for a more recognizable image that can be enjoyed by all.

For zooming I use ZoomIt (Google is your friend), it's probably quicker for you to download and try it than try to explain how it differs from the others.

To lower the monitor further, maybe you could just take it off the post?
