... but seems to be betting on two horses, probably mostly to not offend IDers:

While the article says he seems to be leaning towards ID, that isn't what his words actually suggest to me. He never once mentioned any role for God in evolution, he said that science doesn't answer where everything came from or why. Most scientists will agree with this. Most scientists also think that defining God as a "God of Gaps" is completely pointless and doesn't actually answer anything, but it doesn't actually conflict with reality. This Pope seems to be moving more towards his predecessors position of letting science do what science does and fitting religion in around the edges. Far from pleasing the IDiots, this is exactly what they don't want.

In the same way that Batman, dodging bullets, never comes into actual conflict with a bullet.
A theory is powerful because it makes predictions. A theory which predicts the existence of gaps, which then disappear one by one, might go by a better name: failure.
Indeed, the theory that Creationism is an intellectual fraud, with the prediction that, when the next gap is closed, it will be ignored as evidence, is itself vastly superior more solid than Creationism.

Sounds more like theistic evolution than intelligent design to me. Who knew? A deist pope!
