View Full Version : Guy Puts Naked Mannequins In His Storefront

On Sarasota's North Tamiami Trail, two mannequins are causing controversy.
Some people say they're offensive.
The man who put up the display says he wanted to offend his neighbors and the city of Sarasota.
People have recently sent e-mails to Sarasota city commissioners asking for help to please have this man take these mannequins down.
But city commissioners say, believe it or not, he's not violating any city code.
The owner of this now empty building... commonly referred to as the mirrored house... has put these female mannequins on display in the window.
Arnold Herbst, a neighbor to the windows, says "one day, he'll put the tops on the mannequins, the next day he'll just take them down."
Herbst lives in the neighborhood and says the women are often placed in different sexual positions.
He says it’s always a steamy scene that's getting him and other neighbors very heated.
Less than two hundred yards from this window display, just across the street, is Bay Haven Elementary School.
"It's a terrible sight, especially when you got to walk the kids, you got to take the heads and turn them away."
In July of last year, ABC 7 interviewed the man who owns the mirrored house...David Douthitt.
He was trying to make the place a hair salon with a bikini-clad staff, calling it a clip joint…not a strip joint.
David Douthitt, the business owner says, "I plan on having a beautiful staff of ladies in designer swimwear kind of theme with the beach town we are."
But the salon never opened. Douthitt couldn't get the proper permits and neighbors complained. They didn't want that type of business in their neighborhood.
"Since it's been going thru the courts, since it's been going thru a bunch of stupidity, he's taking it out on the neighborhood."

Seems that due to a typographical error in transcribing the ordinance, the Sarasota city code prohibits having naked manatees in store windows.Okay, for the humor-impaired, I made that last part up...

I am opposed to naked manatees. Won't someone think of the children!!!
My lovely little town recently passed an ordinance making it illegal to walk around one's own house nekkid if one is visible to the public outside. The only positive side to this is they struck out parts that would make it illegal to wear a costume that implied nudity and part that would make breastfeeding illegal in public.

If the prudes stopped him from opening his salon, I guess this is the least he can do to tweak their noses.

Well, thank goodness for the naked manatee law! Those things shouldn't be displayed anywhere! (They remind me of my X too much! ;))
From the link - "Sarasota city commissioner Kelly Kirschner told me tonight, in response to all of this, the city is now considering legislation that you cannot display naked mannequins in this manner. "
This could be interesting. I've seen stores change the clothes on display in the windows. Will this new legislation end up requiring stores to move the dummies to a "safe" area to change the clothes? What if some prude is offended because the big doll is naked for the time it takes to sit the old clothes down, and place the new ones on it?
I realize changing clothes, and placing nude mannequins in sexually suggestive positions are separate matters, but it makes me wonder. :)

Unless it is also somehow one of the "Special Seven" now...

No, the word I intended was indeed nekkid. You see there's naked, and then there's nekkid. From urbandictionary.com:
Nekkid is not simply being without clothing--It means you are gettin' nekkid for mischevious purposes. Naked is natural; nekkid is naughty.

There's a wonderful arthouse cinema in Birmingham that was forced to remove mannequins from its facade. IIRC, it was because of the naked male parts on display, although they were very arty and painted.

Given you lucid description, can I suggest it be added to the list of banned words, please? Surely it cannot be SFW? Or even SFS!*

Shelton, CT. http://home.comcast.net/~advent99/davidshelton.tif
In a corporate park there, a bronze reproduction statue of David stands in the entranceway.
I can't find any google reference to it... but as I recall there was some community objection, although ultimately, the statue was left in place, and is there today.

I find this somewhat curious. The link has the sentence "Since it's been going through the courts, since it's been going thru a bunch of stupidity, he's taking it out on the neighborhood." Did you transcribe the article rather than simply cutting and pasting? And was "thru" a typo?

In the nearby town of Brattleboro, VT, there was a stir last year concerning naked young people gathering in a local park. Although some killjoy residents complained, the city council decided that it was OK, since there was no law explicitly (pun intended) prohibiting public nudity.
All well and fine, until a middle-aged man decided to parade around the sidewalks of downtown in his birthday suit. He was promptly arrested. The rather murky reason given for this seemingly discriminatory act was that it isn't being naked that's bad, it's what you're doing while naked. Sitting on a bench is OK, walking around apparently is obscene. (Maybe that naked/nekkid thing applies here somehow.) But I'm convinced the real reason was that people like to see naked young bodies, and don't want to see creepy old men in the buff (not that anyone could blame them, I guess). Sort of like a city ordinance against eyesores.
It does raise some interesting possibilities, though. Maybe a Board of Nakedness, where you can go apply for a license to go around in the altogether? Of course, such a license would require a visual demonstration. I bet the competition for spots on that board would be pretty fierce.

This guy is missing a good thing, by not having a website devoted to these mannequin antics.

Dave: One more question. Why is my penis green?
Jerry: Well I can explain that too, because around 2am, high out of your mind Dave, you painted it so it would look like, and I quote, "A sexual serpent, capable of spitting its venom everywhere."

I can see it now....
Police knocking on the door cause the neighbor reported you. Toss on some clothes and open door. Police asks if he can come in cause you were seen by a neighbor walking around nekkid in your house. You tell the cop no and neighbors is mistaken, because obviously you have clothes on. Cop goes to neighbor, he pulls out the digital camera he used to take pictures as proof and gets arrested for being a peeping tom and pornography.:D
Bring it on!

Ah, the articles all had the location wrong. The house is a good ways from Tamiami.
