Cheap is good, free is better.

If they'd pay me to run it, that'd be greeeeaaaaat!

Are you looking for a site that will let you store stuff via ftp?

Or are you looking for a piece of software to run on your system? Is so, please divulge your operating system.

Thanks,

Sorry, I'm looking for the piece of software for me to run.

I'm running windows 98. Yes, laugh if you want, but the blaster virus didn't even target my obsolete system. It's good to be obsolete. Maybe I can get an old commodor 64.........

I still have a Win98SE machine, but I only use it for word processing.

I checked a couple good ones, vsftpd and ncftpd, but they are only for Linux/Unix systems. Probably you can find some decent free clients, but a server might be tougher.

Here's the site for wu-ftpd. They don't mention platforms.

Check out this Google page listing various servers:

Thanks. Seems to be unix only. I may have to shell out the 40 bucks for Serv-U. Didn't want to though, since this is a temporary solution. Maybe I can figger out my cvs server before the trial of Serv-U runs out.

Otherwise I have to put my trust in the likes of this guy. (http://www.jgaa.com/?cmd=show_article&article_id=2&menu=36)

Try this one. (http://www.jgaa.com/index.php?menu=154)

Another. (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pureftpd/) You can usually find this stuff at sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net.

Yeah, still don't trust that Jgaa fellow. Seems like a maladjusted twerp.

I may have to just make that machine a linux box. It would make the cvs server more reliable as well.

I use SmartFTP, it's shareware so supposedly you're supposed to buy it after you evaluate it, but you don't heve to and it never expires. Download it here. (http://www.smartftp.com/)

Actually, the unlicensed version is free, but you can't get support for it. I've never needed support.

I am checking out filezilla (http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/) which I just found. See if that works first.

So the server is up an running, however, it doesn't want to work when the firewall (zone alarm) is running on the host machine. I have the ftp server accesses all to allow. Damn things never want to work the first time.

Does anyone know if I have to have the program, ws_ftp in this case, somehow recognized and allowed through the firewall? I wouldn't think, but I don't know a lot about this.

Just a wild guess, but wouldn't you need to open ports 20 and 21 to allow traffic in both directions.

can you open up ports in zone alarm?

This is not a guess...I have no idea.

I'll have to dig through their documentation.

Thanks for the help.

Zone alarm, by default, seems to block everything but the most basic ports. IIRC, you can set it so that every new use of a port pops up a question box if that application should be able to use that port.

The ftp client I use is CoffeeCup Free FTP 1.0 (http://download.com.com/3000-2160-915590.html?legacy=cnet).

Works fine with my firewall (Zone Alarm), but as aup mentioned, I have it set up to prompt me when any application (other than my browsers and email client) attempts to "go out."
