View Full Version : Stundie Finals For July - Vote Now!
Mobyseven
6th August 2007, 02:06 AM
Buon giorno, i miei amici! I hope you're all excited for this month's finals - there are some real beauties this month, so my prediction is for a close call...I'm willing to be proven wrong though!
You'll notice this month that there are less finalists than normal - fourteen, to be precise. This is primarily a result of the rule put in place last month placing higher emphasis on off-site nominations, allowing only 25% of the finalists to be from the JREF forums. While this has resulted in fewer nominees, I do not feel as though it has resulted in lower quality - if anything, only the best from JREF can be found here, along with the best from other sources, and so competition should be tighter and more exciting (as exciting as an internet poll can be, at least!)
So without further delay, may I present Teh Stundies!

STUNDIE FINALS FOR JULY
-1-
Nominated by Hokulele and Belz...
[On sources of gravity...]
24 carat nonsense. In order for gravity to work, you need a source of GRAVITY.
[...]
What are viable sources of gravity?
Air pressure.
-2-
Nominated by Par
[On stalking versus following...]
Earlier, Aldo was discussing his plans to stalk Mark Roberts.
P, you little *****.
I never said I would.
I suggested that people should follow him and confirm his identity.
-3-
Nominated by Sword of Truth
[On alien masters and the moon...]
An alien race, many, many hundreds of years ago, much, much more intelligent than our own species, through advances in genetically-altered ocular biology, caused humans to develop with this permanent image of a moon in our skies via each of our personal visual system.
As such, every time we look up in the sky, we see *something* that is individually generated within our own mental psyches. We attribute this to being the "moon" in orbit around the sky, but the aforementioned alien race wanted us to *think* there was one so when they returned in the year 2056 (google Anipoid Race Returns To Earth) they can do so in a space vehicle of their own that *resembles* the moon so we will not be alarmed.
-4-
Nominated by Horatius
[On the gold of the devil...]
Check this out - Gold has been AVERAGED to $666 for the longest time.
Right now it's precisely $666.60
http://www.kitco.com/market/
This is NOT accidental by any means.
-5-
Nominated by Horatius
[On parking aeroplanes...]
And as for 911 how many of you pseudo scientists could park a Boeing 757 in your two car garage? Unless Houdini or David Copperfield posts here, it is unlikely the rest of you could accomplish such an illusion. That's the story your government has convinced you to believe: A box cutter weilding IslamoMuslimofaciastradicalArabterrorist who couldn't even pilot a single engine Cessna, flew a Boeing 757 with fighter pilot precision at speeds of 500 mph through a 16 foot wide hole into the interior of the Pentagon. Now who needs the tin foil?
-6-
Nominated by bruto
[On evolution as a Nazi conspiracy...]
Again, the gross ignorance that public schools indoctrinate students with is why most people don't understand the simple principle of sedimentation. The evolutionists love it that way, because then the next generation cannot challenge their ridiculous conclusions. This is why they go emotionally ballistic if someone challenges their theories in the arena of academics. It is a threat to the very sanity of the evolutionist. They MUST go unchallenged! To be challenged is unthinkable because evolution cannot possibly defend itself against a creation idea. If school children are given the choice, the Nazi evolutionists would not be able to keep them ignorant. And it make sense because the first thing the Nazis did in WWII was kill off all of the Jewish intellectuals. Knowledge by the general public is dangerous to evolution and why evolutionists are such zealots to make sure the curse of ignorance they push on the young is not challenged or broken. In the end they will lose. Truth always triumphs.
-7-
Nominated by lapman
[On the evidence for a coverup...]
The evidence of the cover up is in the fact that it has been covered up- hence why Scott is the only one talking about it.
-8-
Nominated by Horatius
[On Die Hard 4.0...]
so if Die Hard 4 is any predictor of the next attack, we can expect to see the stock markets crash, transportation disabled, loss of electricity, control of all media outlets, fake TV footage being presented as real, the theft of much of the nations wealth, etc. this can all be carried out by a relatively small group of insiders who can cause this destruction using computers. This same group (the red team), was also mostly responsible for 911, by being able to control the war games, disable NORAD and other defenses, etc. It even seems as the title is offering us a choice, we can either live free, or live in the reality of die hard 4. i choose to live free.
-9-
Nominated by AZCat
[On the unified theory of everything...]
It is the only proven possible theory that explains every bit of WTC debris/destruction/power. It is also the only theory that is a single theory. All other theories require bizarre ommissions of facts/circumstances and several sub theories to explain that which is explained in the single theory. All other theories require many of these other sub theories to explain what is already explained in the Thermate, C4-like explosives, thermonuclear devices and 911 Was an Inside Job (TCN911WIJ).
-10-
Nominated by Gravy
[On how the conspiracy theories could be falsified...]
If Gravy started working on our side... Would be a very bad sign.
I would re-examine all the facts....
-11-
Nominated by Anti-sophist
[On the Theory of Relativity...]
This tells me that the technology to create small nuclear devices is strong possibility.
[...]
It would only require about a dozen of them in each tower to produce the demolition witnessed....
-12-
Nominated by 8den
[On FHM for the truth...]
However, hiring models to wear 9/11 gear or do shoots with themes (Guantanamo Bay for example) is a very good idea. You could extend it to softcore if you really had to, but for some people, a pretty face and a brain is a big enough turn on.
-13-
Nominated by AZCat
[On the bouncing planes theory...]
No 767 has done anything remotely similar to what allegedly happened on 9/11
A 767 traveling at 500mph is going to pack a punch. I'm not saying it won't do damage, heck, it would probably knock some buildings keen over, but what I'm saying is implausible is that it would penetrate the building completely and then explode once inside. Aluminum Planes fail at point of impact. always!!!!
-14-
Nominated by CurtC
[On lies of magnitude...]
It was common knowledge untill more recent that the sun was 3mil miles, they then put a 9 in front of it.
Simple math. The moon goes around the earth every 30 days, it completes a full cycle every 30 days. A sun cycle takes 12mos. The moon is
250,000mi
x 12
----------
3,000,000mi to the sun. We are being lied to about many things. Ready.

While I would have liked to vote for a superb example of circular reasoning from MJD, I'm afraid I have to participate in the Kirkman landslide. His appreciation of the nature of gravity is simply the stupidest thing I have ever seen anyone have the nerve to say in public, but even that pales into insignificance compared to the fact that he self-William Rea'd and actually chose to defend it. If it needed anything else, William himself supplied it by trying to suggest that MK didn't mean what he so obviously did mean. All in all, this is the perfect Stundie, and from someone who, from his earlier behaviour on this forum, has already forfeited the right to any respect. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if Malcolm doesn't win, it's proof of a conspiracy !

Makes sense to me. The moon is 250,000 miles from the earth. So naturally you multiply that distance by the number of months it takes the earth to orbit the sun to determine the distance of the earth from the sun! (Never no mind that "months" are irregular in length, and that the distance to the moon has no bearing, whatsoever....)
It's like calculating the distance from my flat to New York. It's 18 hours in a 747 from here to New York.

... but even that pales into insignificance compared to the fact that he self-William Rea'd and actually chose to defend it. If it needed anything else, William himself supplied it by trying to suggest that MK didn't mean what he so obviously did mean.
Dave
The bit about "he self-William Rea'd and actually chose to defend it" is clearly referring to Malcolm's actions in defending his nonsense, not yours. The William Rea aspect is an allusion to your earlier attempts to defend Stundie nominees, which notably and spectacularly failed. So how is that a lie?
The next comment, "William himself supplied it by trying to suggest that MK didn't mean what he so obviously did mean", isn't a lie either. He hasn't referred to you "defending" Malcolm, he simply mentions that you suggested he didn't mean what he said. I'm not sure who you distinguish that from "speculated that he was confused about the phenomena involved in the operation of IVs", in order to declare it a lie (and a flame!), but let's take a look at your posts on the subject, shall we?
I think he means vacuum not gravity.
I know what he said, I was speculating that what he was really trying to describe was a vacuum, particularly as he then went on to discuss tv tubes. You have a problem with that?
In what way did you not "suggest that MK didn't mean what he so obviously did mean"?
Dave Rogers' characterizations of your actions is entirely accurate. He is not a liar, but, once again, you are.

No, I thought if it hadn't been for Malkie I'd have gone for that. It's just that it's such a way-out schizoid delusion that it stops right there. There's no comeback. Whereas Malkie was really, really sure that gravity was just atmospheric pressure pushing us all down (and that's the kindest, most rational interpretation), and presented as evidence for this the well-known fact that TV tubes are evacuated to stop the electrons just falling to the bottom instead of reaching the screen.
I'm sorry, but "Anonymous" will just have to try another day.

You were trying to give the silly idea an alibi. You failed. What it takes micro seconds to identify as funny ideas, you take days to mess up and try to alibi those things you never fully understood. Next time try understanding the big picture, before making false statements about things you never understood in the fist place. One quote per person. From what i've seen - Malcolm Kirkman is actually worse than Stundie.

Did everyone else miss the guy saying that the moon is an alien conspiracy!?
Yes, actually, I did miss that. Pity, I would've voted for it if I'd noticed.
So, I take it then that this "William Rea" fella is against the Stundies?
And how!

I was going to give The Poster Formerly Known as Malcolm Kirkman my vote, but there's something about Ed Ward's matter-of-fact summary of his TCN911WIJ theory that I'm particularly fond of.

Actually, I really like the parking aeroplanes one too. It took real skill to steer that plane right in there and position it so perfectly - right in the hole its own landing gear made on impact!
:dl:
But I'm afraid it's Malkie for the landslide this month.

and the sheer subtleness with which he implied that the hole was already there, to be aimed at, made it just so sublime!

Alas, yes, it appears the Kirkman Train has left the station. Juggernaut for the Win!

It's not that it isn't a good, crazy post, it's just that I think he's plagiarizing it. (http://www.baen.com/library/0671720856/0671720856.htm)

Too many good ones this month.
Malcolm has had so many - gravity, steel, no air at 35000 feet, etc. I thought he was going to be ineligible, and the Stundie would be awarded with another bar or chevron - the additional "Kirkman" or two to reward really outstanding stupidness. Did that idea go away?

A note on this: The finalist are ordered in what I can only call a 'semi-random' way. That is, I don't use a random number generator, or a hard-boiled egg, or the I-Ching to sort finalists. Instead I just rely on the fact that I cut and paste the finalists through so many text document permutations that the result is going to wind up looking quite random.
Efficiency isn't my strong suit.

I had to go with mjd. After all, the circle is a perfect geometric figure, and mjd's reasoning was so perfectly circular, the whole was perfection2.
I do have a request to make of our benevolent dictator. If future Stundies nominees are weighted towards sources other than this forum, the OP of the voting thread should include links to the original outside sources. Not being able to read the discussions these fine examples of Stundie-ness were culled from makes me feel like I'm missing out on a lot of amusement.

Who told you I was benevolent???
For the moment, the 25% rule stays. I really don't think it has had anything of a negative impact on Teh Stundies, as only the best of the JREF forums get through to compete - no worthy finalist is dismissed (unless there are a lot of worthy finalists).
I'll think about your request. In general, my policy has been that the links are available in the nomination thread (and all have been verified by me) and that duplicating them is just unnecessary work on my part. However, if a few other people feel strongly enough I'm certainly happy to include links (more work for me, *sigh*) but to all nominations. I'm not going to only include links to sources outside the JREF forums.

Well, I sympathise with the work, but it's a good idea. I suspect the bandwagon that is Malkie was partly fuelled by the fact that a lot of people had read that particular bit of insanity in context.

I took a long time over this one, partly to be sure that I wasn't voting for Malcolm simply out of bias, and partly because mjd's was also totally outrageous. However, I've seen the "evidence of a cover-up is that there's no evidence" argument and variations thereupon many times, but the "air pressure is a source of gravity" is a completely "fresh" argument. It finally came down to which made me laugh harder, and that was Malcolm.

Stundie has, at this point, all but disappeared, so I think we're going to get NO quotes for August.
And yes, that was a shameless attempt to get him back, because I love to laugh at him.

I always thought that Stundies are supposed to stand on their own without really needing context. Of course some, especially the particularly ironic ones, will need some context and many, like Malcolm's, will be supported by other comments the nominee has made, but I think it is best not to promote the context too much. I see these awards as more like the Pith awards than Language Award. It is better to have short, snappy stupidity than to have to wade through a whole thread to understand it. All the links are available if people really want to look them up, but I think it is best that the actual final allows quotes to stand on their own.

That is pretty much how I feel about it too. If the Stundie cannot stand on its own, then perhaps it shouldn't be in the finals in the first place.

We are gathered here today to honour Malcolm Kirkman, who has brought a great amount of laughter into our lives. Through dedicated research Malcolm Kirkman has provided yet another example of an object denser than a singularity.
24 carat nonsense. In order for gravity to work, you need a source of GRAVITY.
We gather tonight to award The Stundie. The Stundie is the sister award to the Darwin: for those who refuse to remove themselves from the gene pool by accident, but will make it their lifetime goal to poison it.
We thank you, Malcolm Kirkman, and hope that you continue to post your comments on this or any other subject, using your gift for inadvertent comedy as a lesson to all of us here at the NWO.
To receive The Stundie is one of the most profound honours offered by the members of the JREF Conspiracy Theory Subforum, and one which in your case is well earned. Many attempt The Stundie, few attain it. You, Malcolm Kirkman, have marked yourself as one deserving such an award.
Congratulations and Mazel Tov!

Forgot to show up at the race for third: RevolutionJim (-48 votes)
Don't forget to keep the nominations coming for August, right until that point when I arbitrarily say "That belongs in September!"
Also, next month the voting period will be shortened to 10 days.
