In the latest SWIFT at http://www.randi.org/jr/2007-08/080307conjuror.html#i4 , reader Bryan Farha notes among Sylvia Browne's failed predictions the following:
7. The government will allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana this year. (prediction for 2006 – Wrong)
Ah! But note here that Sylvia Browne was merely predicting that "The government" would allow medical merijuana prescriptions. She doesn't say WHICH government! If she had said "The U.S. Federal government," she would of course have been dead wrong. But, fortunately, she left an out for herself -- the government of the State of California does allow marijuana to be prescribed for medical use by a doctor, for some conditions.
So in a way, her prediction was right! ... Except for the inconvenient fact that state laws allowing medical marijuana use in California have been in existence for around 7 years now.
(Legal note: Although medical marijuana is legal under California law, it is still illegal under Federal law. So while you can't be prosecuted in a California State court for it, you can still be prosecuted in any Federal court, including those within the State of California.)
