The interesting part about Phelps' history is that he really was a good guy in the civil right movement way back when it took some courage to take that stand. Topeka, after all.

I'm not sure it's even that. I think Phelps is driven by the same sort of feedback cycle that really pathetic forum trolls thrive on - do something obnoxious, see how much [rule8] you can stir up, then soak up all derision and hatred you provoke in your audience.

I have no doubt that he does hate homosexuals, America, you name it, and he certainly preaches a message of hate, but I think the hatred is almost ancillary. What he is mostly interested in is the reaction he provokes.

Possible, though not likely.
