Wow - just finished this book and I must recommend it. Lots of pictures and very well researched. The authors make the claim that Houdini worked for the secret service for many years. Their claim seems valid. The second half of the book was the best, its when Houdini takes on the mediums. He was wonderful!
Throughout these chapters I was cheering him on, but on the other hand disgusted that we still have these parasites today. With all this knowledge and history out there...people are still willing to throw money at these people.
Fun to read about something or place I've learned about from the skeptic community. In 2002 I went on a tour of Lily Dale, NY with Joe Nickel from the CICOP group, that place is mentioned in this book. Also at the TAM5 meeting this Jan we heard a discussion by the current editor of Scientific American and it's dealing with Houdini and Margery (one of the most famous mediums of that era) Penn and Teller also discuss this in their *ull*hit series.
The chapters discussing Doyle and Houdini are almost identical to another book I would recommend Final Seance.
