USED OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY LETTERHEAD IN CRANK LETTER TO ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT...

Al Franken In Sorry State
Comedian apologizes to Ashcroft for "imprudent attempt at satire"
AUGUST 20--Comedian Al Franken last month wrote an apology letter to Attorney General John Ashcroft, admitting that he was not truthful when he previously sought Ashcroft's views on abstinence.
....
Franken's missive, written on letterhead from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, claimed that he had already received abstinence stories from other prominent Republicans, including Condoleezza Rice and Senator Rick Santorum. However, in his July 11 apology, Franken admitted that he had not received those abstinence stories and called his solicitation to Ashcroft, "an imprudent attempt at satire."

author 'given' 14 Harvard assistants to research anti-Right Wing Media book...
""Lies" contains lots of citations and statistics because Franken, during a fellowship this year at Harvard's Shorenstein press center, was given 14 research assistants to help him scour the media archives. Critics will undoubtedly find it as selective as the conservative books (by Ann Coulter and Bernard Goldberg, among others) that he skewers. "

when one goes to "write" a book, they also may research while writing such a book. When one cannot even do their own research and rely on others to supply the content for the book, it's LAME.

Franken describes the entire research project in full IN the book.
The researchers are characters in the book. Their pictures and biographies are in the book.

wow...seems like a creative waste of space.
Ive read parts of the book and I dont claim to have read the entire book.......and if you've noticed I havent claimed to have read the book.
why does he waste so much space talking about his credentials and dedicating space to the people who researched the book, when he could supposedly be "tearing down" those lying evil conservatives.....
from everything Ive read he fails to do it, again.
just make more of a jackass of himself for "comic" relief....if you find things like that funny.

This concept may be a big step up from the "see Dick run" kind of books you're used to, but a book can be about multiple, related topics, e.g., lying conservatives AND the process of doing the research about lying conservatives. You think that second topic is a waste of space, but you probably think that about the whole book anyway, so who cares?

You do not know much about writing non-fiction do you? Boy, if I could afford a staff then I could readily publish the books I want to write.
Non-fiction writing often requires a staff of research assistants to help collect, sort, and double-check the voluminous details that emerge when doing non-fiction writing. Sure, I suppose that a single non-fiction writer could do 100% of their own research, but doing so would make these types of books very expensive and rare.
Just think, for example, if an American historian was writing about ancient Japanese warlords, would you really expect them to travel to Japan, have an in-depth and personal knowledge of Japanese, fighting, shooting, riding, strategy, politics, customs, and so on? All of this would take years and many people simply do not have that much time.
Now then, the writer in question would likely have a good knowledge about one or two of these items but that is about it. However, I would expect them to know where to find this data and to make sure that it is accurate and that is where the staff comes in.

Oh my. It appears someone does not understand the word plagiarism. I better help him out. From Webster's:
to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source
intransitive senses : to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source
Let's see, Coulter used the exact same phrasing, did not credit her source. Yep, sounds like plagiarism to me.
Regardless, did you think the Fox suit had merit, NTW?

As usual NTW, your position is totally distorted by your extremist views.
You obviously have very little pratical knowledge of the process of content creation, especially in a non-fictional realm.
I realize it is your goal to smash the "left-wing crazies" that lurk in the darkness around your house, and perhaps are the source for the voices in your head, but please do a little research before you are so quit to jump to conclusions.
It is becoming increasingly more difficult to take you seriously in any way.

You need to set your expectations a lot lower.
Question, how much of a cut does Harvard get? It seems like their university resources were heavily used by Franken for this commercial venture.

Good stuff.
Al Franken had a funny bit in _Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot_ with his research assistant Jeff. The accusation that a ghostwriter authored Franken's latest book is humorously ironic: Rush Limbaugh, William Bennett, and other blowhards are notorious for having not written their moronic scribblings. I think John Fund from the _Wall Street Journal_ wrote Rush's second book, and in fact complimented Franken on a job well done.
Feel free to challenge the actual content of the book.

I mean, we know that George Bush (a "conservative," I believe) personally composes each and every word he reads, or tries to read. Except maybe for unfortunate lines contributed by someone from the CIA or another agency, or the British, for which GWB is not responsible. But other than that, he's a fount of flowing literary gems. The book is pretty darn funny in parts. Some parts aren't funny. Some parts (such as some of the stuff on Coulter and crew) are just sad.
It is an angry book in places. Angry about what passes for discourse in this country.

At least Franken tries to make us laugh about it. A sort of gallows humor, I suppose.
