The Mayan "The World Will End in 2012" prophecy Crap is already starting to spread like a virus.
I understand that most experts on Mayan Culture consider the whole prophecy bit to be nonsense --The Mayans never made such a prediction--but since have facts kept the Woo Woo crowd from going crazy?
This could reach Y2K level insanity before it's over.

There are also supposed to be a couple other 2012 predictions. One guy even figured out that there are to be a finite number of popes. I think there are to be 2 more, so he also agrees with the 2012 date. That gives the whole thing a religous bent. Oh boy, we are going to have fun!!!
Here is the theory from 7mythbuster.org
THE LAST POPE PROPHESY
"While in Rome in 1139, Saint Malachy, the Bishop of Ireland, is said to have gone into a trance and received a vision in which he foresaw all the popes from the death of Innocent II until the end of time. Afterward he wrote a few words about each one, and before he died in 1148 he gave the manuscript to Pope Innocent II, who is said to have deposited it in the Vatican Archives, where it lay under the dust of almost four and a half centuries, forgotten until it was discovered in 1590 and published. 868 years ago Malachy predicted that there would follow Pope Celestine II (who died in 1146) 112 popes. If one can believe that there’s anything to this prophecy, one must believe that we are very close to the end of the age because, about the last pope, the 112th whom Malachy called Peter the Roman, he wrote the following words: "In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge the people. The End." “The formidable Judge” who “will judge the people” is Jesus Christ at His second coming and then will be “The End.” “The city of seven hills will be destroyed” means the City of Rome and the papacy will be destroyed (besides Rome the Bible states that at the end the entire planet will be desolate which marks the beginning of the millennium). Why does this prophetic statement, if accurate, mean that we must be very near the end? Because the 111th pope is the German Cardinal, Ratzinger, the current pope (formerly the Head of the Office of Inquisition), who has taken the name "Benedict XVI,” and he’s in the twilight of his years, near eighty years old.
For me, what gives this Irish bishop’s prophesy some degree of credence is that it is said that his one-phrase description of each of the popes is accurate. I don’t know about popes number 1 through 108, because I’d have to be a papacy historian to be able to determine how true this is, but I’ve lived long enough to know something about numbers 109 and 110. Let’s take a look at what Malachy wrote about them:
109th John Paul I, 1978 – 1978. The bishop’s descriptive phrase: “Of the Half Moon.”
He was born in the diocese of Belluno (beautiful moon) and was baptized Albino Luciani (white light). He became pope on August 26th, 1978, when the moon appeared exactly half full and was in its waning phase. He died the following month, soon after an eclipse of the moon. He died 33 days after assuming the papacy, about the length of the lunar cycle of 30 days. (Some suspect that he was murdered; he was buried without an autopsy.)
110th John Paul II, 1978 – 2005. The bishop’s descriptive phrase: “From the Toil of the Sun.”
He was born on May 18, 1920 during an eclipse of the sun. Like the sun, he came out of the east (Poland). He was buried April 8, 2005 on a day when a relatively rare annular total eclipse occurred. Malachy wrote “from the toil of the sun;” what kind of toil or figurative work does the sun do? In addition to providing heat and light, it travels around the earth (from a certain prospective) just as John Paul II traveled around the earth, systematically attempting to unify our planet’s populace into a one world religion.
Please keep in mind that these descriptive phrases were written 868 years ago; just imagine us trying to see 868 years in our future. Here’s what Malachy wrote about the current pope:
111th Benedict XVI, 2005 - ?. The bishop’s descriptive phrase: “The Glory of the Olive.”
The meaning of the olive is unclear, but the olive branch is a symbol of peace; therefore, one can speculate that this pope will bring peace to the world, at least until the 112th pope arrives. Christ stated in the Book of Matthew, Chapter 24, verses 21, and 29-31 that the greatest tribulation of all time would end just prior to His coming. The Book of Revelation states that during the tribulation of the saints (the saved) the remaining earthly inhabitants (the lost) that will be worshiping the beast power will be living in relative peace prior to the unexpected worldwide destruction.
112th Peter the Roman, implies that he will an Italian and the Church claims that its roots reach all the way back to Peter, the Apostle of Jesus; thus, the first and the last.
If one studies the line-by-line, no private interpretation of Revelation presented in Chapter Six of the Bible study guide entitled "No Private Interpretation" one will discover what the central role the last pope will play at “The End.” Click the "CRISIS / N.P.I." tab at left for viewing or free download

Don't forget there's a comet or asteroid or some such supposed to come closer to Earth than the moon. If it sneezes or something it could hit us!
On a side note, anyone wanting to get rid of their worldly goods can unload them on me. I'll see to it that it all gets sorted and stuff.

After a few years of doomsday kooks on the Bad Astronomy Board I have missed the end of the world at least five times already. Wish these doomsayers would get it together and do something useful with their lives.
The 2012 doomsayers are starting to rear their ugly head more and more now. Rogue planets, Venus transit, Mayan calendars, you name it.

the mayan calandar ends in 2013, does not mean the end, if anything
the arrival of something, the start of something new.
change can be a good thing. then again, there are those who try to link
that particular year with the arrival of a very large asteroid.
many speculate
that it will be a near-miss but worry that any risk of contact with the moon
would upset everything as we know it; the tides, weather, etc
Im not worried, but Im sure that watching it in the night sky will certainly
worry others :jaw-dropp
this might be re-assuring, proof that we have watchers
many believe that these beings will protect us from collision:

Is that really the only relevant half moon you could find in his history, the day he became pope. (Which I have checked was indeed a half moon).
Going on the meaning of the moon for so long in European folklore, I would have expected the man to be half mad.
There are just so many things you can fit to this tiny sentence it's not very convincing, the first thing I associate pope John Paul I with is defenitally not the moon.
110th John Paul II, 1978 – 2005. The bishop’s descriptive phrase: “From the Toil of the Sun.”

Poland was communist at the time wouldn't a reference to a hammer or sickle have made more sense?
The earth travels around the sun.

Compared to John Paul II this pope is a warmonger and a troublemaker.
112th Peter the Roman, implies that he will an Italian and the Church claims that its roots reach all the way back to Peter, the Apostle of Jesus; thus, the first and the last.
But I'm sure that if this doesn't turn out to be so, you have an alternative explanation ready.

Can we really get an accurate count of the number of popes since the office was invented? For some periods there was more than one claimant to the title at a time.

'Fraid not. I've already heard the cop-outs.
I asked a believer if March 1st, 2013 would be a good date for him to have me laugh at him if nothing had happened by then. He reply was that the huge changes *start* in December of 2012. The effects may be noticable later. How much later? He couldn't say.
