View Full Version : The Secret - Woo Infiltration of Serious Conference

Every year, there is a great conference where I live designed to support budding writers in various fields. Much to my dismay, one of the headliners this year is, brace yourself, Lisa Nicols, author of The Secret. Argh!!!! Even worse, they put her in the non-fiction section. Double argh!!!! Great, incentive to generate more best-selling woo.

She obviously wished to speak at the conference and the universe manifested it: there was nothing the conference organizers could do to stop it. :hypnotize :hypnotize :hypnotize
Seriously, I'm aghast that almost a half century after a man first orbited the earth thanks to nothing but the laws of physics that adults -- educated adults! -- still believe in fairy tales. :covereyes
If you do go to the conference, Hokulele, you must mosey up to the mike and say "hi", etc. :catfight: ;)

I'm currently involved in a row elsewhere with a Reiki'ite, and we have made an agreement that I will read "The Tao of Reiki" and she will read "Placebo: Mind Over Matter in Modern Medicine". This afternoon I went to my local library in search of the Reiki book (I sure ain't gonna pay for it).
It was bad enough that the New Age section and the Health section were located next to each other, but the allocation of books between the two was truly appalling. The Health section not only contained expected useful material on the likes of (ie) asthma or diabetes, but also endless books on Homeopathy, Reiki, TT, and more...
It is little wonder that woo-driven nonsense is so accepted in the general public consciousness when a place of education fails to differentiate so. :(

What's TT?
Anyways, on the person speaking... I wonder what she's going to talk about that's writing related.
Also the guy right below Nichols rings a little bit of red alert.
New Age stuff is too much into the world today. Companies offer New Agey classes as training even.

The Secret and its ilk turn my stomach as much as anyone's here, but it is a writers conference, not a scientific conference. However, after reading her entry on the Bio's page (https://www.mauiwriters.com/conference/presenters.html), there is still a problem with her being there.
I get the impression that she was invited not as the author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, but as "one of the leading teachers featured on the international hit DVD and New York Times bestseller, The Secret". In other words, she didn't write The Secret, but was just quoted as an "expert". It sounds like she's there not to discuss writing, but to promote her views. If anyone wanted to raise a fuss about her appearance there, I think that would be the way to go.

Yeah, this is the part from her presentation that really bothers me.
Lisa Nichols is one of the featured contributors to this blockbuster New York Times bestseller and she will be at the Conference to explain it all to you, and how you can use The Secret to make your book a success.
If she was just there to talk about writing (writing FICTION dammit!) and marketing, I would have no problem with it. If she is there to promote this junk, I am still grumpy about this. I may have to take blobru's advice and attend so I can ask some, er, "questions".

Hokulele, put her claims about the Secret to a practical test. If what she claims is true, it should be a simple matter of beliving she will fall into a live volcano while she is in Hawaii :)

I am hoping for something more like everyone in the audience pointing and laughing at her, so I can claim that she "attracted" the ridicule. Unfortunately, Maui does coddle its woos. *Sigh*
