BAGHDAD - Thousands of street sweepers and garbage collectors descended on al-Adhamiya this week in one of the most aggressive beautification efforts in the district in decades. Under the supervision of the neighborhood council, some 2,200 workers swept, dug and scraped the streets, collected garbage, and cleaned sewers clogged for years. Behind all the activity, however, was an attempt to mollify a section of town long seen as violent center of resistance against the occupation.
Al Adhamiya is considered the heart of Sunni Baghdad, a former support base for Saddam Hussein in the capital, a conservative district that closes itself off to the rest of the city. For Coalition soldiers it is the hornet's nest, where unconfirmed rumors about murky events flare up anger against the occupation.
