Bush drops dog (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/030830/168/54b64.html)
Is this really news? It's kinda funny though. the look on the little girls face is worth a million bucks.
:D
Poor Bush, at least he didn't drop a baby. Moms be careful at the next Bush meet and greet.
Edited to add: I promise not to get on my soap box if anyone wants to take a pot shot. After all making fun of presidents is one of our past times.

I love how the folks in the background look absolutely mortified. You would think he kicked the dog after he dropped it.

Don't worry, by the time the media gets finished with the story he will have.

There might have been less of a reaction from the crowd if it were a baby he dropped instead of a dog. It kind of looks like Dubya is preparing to punt the little yapper over the goal line, though.

Hmmm... He forgot where he was and thought he had taken a long snap and was now going to kick for the extra point?
Wrong game?
What would I know - I'm not from there... :D

My friend Kenny will be glad to hear that.

Shoot, this is the definition of news. (You've heard of, and obliquely refer to "Man bites dog.")
Explain to me how this would not be news, or why, and how any news outfit could ignore it, unless no criticism, or negative publicity of any kind, even of his own making can be generated about this particular human being.

What's funny is the dude on the left look compared to the girl. She like "OMG", and he's like "Hmm..."
And of course, now time for the standard "Bush is an idiot."

It looks to me like he's calling the dog "Safe" at home plate.
Instead of gasping, the little girl up front should try blocking the plate.

...unless no criticism, or negative publicity of any kind, even of his own making can be generated about this particular human being. This is not the subject of my question about the news value of this story. The fact that something is embarrassing or critical or negative does not remove any news value.
What makes it news? Is the only newsworthy aspect of it the embarrassing nature of it?

No.
Human interest. No.

Human interest. If there is no potential for embarrassment then of what human interest is there? It's funny because there is a component of embarrassment. If the dog fell from an inanimate object would it be news?

Well, at least it looks as if the dog drop was an accident and not a purposeful body slam.
I believe that it was Lyndon Johnson who used to pick his beagles up into the air by their ears. I'm not really sure what it was supposed to do, but it was no accident. Remember seeing a picture of him doing it once, and the dog seemed to be having no fun. But then I doubt Bush's dog was happy either.

Just trying to avoid an unnecessary argument.
Not sure why we're looking for "issues."
You asked :
"Is the only newsworthy aspect of it the embarrassing nature of it?"
Now you say "a component".
I'm not disagreeing.

Whatever sells papers I guess. Whatever piques the interest of humans.
J-Lo and Ben, I don't care, but a lot of other people apparently do. Why? Dunno. I'm no genius (obviously).

If it bleeds it leads. A little T&A doesn't hurt either.

Bush was framed, the stupid dog jumped!!! I'll bet the Dems secretly trained him to do it.
Or maybe Bush was going for the $1 million challenge, and almost got it. "Damn, just 5 more seconds..."
