LOS ANGELES — California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (search), the grandson of Mexican immigrants who counts improving race relations among his biggest pursuits, refused Thursday to renounce his past ties to a little-known Hispanic organization considered by critics to be as racist as the Ku Klux Klan.

Instead, Bustamante, who is running to be governor of California, praised the Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan, or MEChA (search), and said he still supports it.

I hope the good people of Cali don't elect this nazi.

Could you imagine the uproar from the bedwetting leftists if a white republican refused to renouce ties to the KKK?

Can you imagine the bedwetting leftist who supports any racist organisation, Hispanic or otherwise?

I for one do not support the racist chapters of the Black Panthers. I believe other leftists are like-minded.

Nice strawman, though. It'll look good over my bed. Did you get it from Al's?

That's not nice, Tony. Incontenienenece (I know how to start spelling it, I just don't know how to stop... a bit like my bladder) is a legitimate medical complaint, made more difficult by the moral judgements of 'dryers' like yourself. You should come along to my BWA group one day- it'd really open your eyes. And nostrils.

Since they say it, it MUST be true. They have absolutly no reason to lie.

The posters at Stormfront also contend they are not racists.

Looks like Bustamante has the hispanic vote locked down tight. This is one really good argument for slowing down the influx of immigrants into California. They got Davis elected for a second term and now it looks like they might get Davis' "mini me" elected.

If Bustemonte gets elected, it will be because of the racist hispanics that vote down racical lines.

motto of la MEChA:

"Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada (For the Race, everything. For those outside the Race, nothing)."

On a recent news Bustamante was asked what his thoughts were concerning la MECHA's motto. He dodged the question three or four times. I was amazed. I thought the question was a complete softball and Bustamante would say something to the effect that the motto in no way reflected his views and that if he was governor he would be the governor for all the people regardless of their race.

Apparently, I didn't understand the politics of the situation. Bustamante either actually does have a strong racist element in his philosophy (his previous use of the word ****** suggests that) or is so beholden to extremist latino factions that he can't take even the smallest stand against them.

Either way, in normal circumstances, Bustamante's dodging of the question, his use of a racist epithet in public and a wide range of unpopular views on subjects ranging from immigration to bilinqual education would have made it impossible for him to get the Democratic nomination let alone win a statewide election. It will be interesting to see how Democrats react to him in the current situation.

``To connect MEChA with the Ku Klux Klan is totally ridiculous,'' said Gil Villagrán, a Santa Clara County Social Services Agency manager who belonged to the group at SJSU in the early 1970s. ``MEChistas never killed one person, never set off one bomb and certainly never strung anybody to a tree because of their ethnicity.''

Moreover, say MEChA supporters, the organization's motto was never meant to be literally translated into English. The word raza does mean race. But colloquially it also means ``the people.''

You want sour cream with those tacos?

The word raza does mean race. But colloquially it also means "the people.''

So if we substitute "the people" for "the race" in the motto, we get:

For the people, everything. For those outside the people, nothing.

So who exactly is it that constitutes “the people” and who is outside the people? Still sounds like racist (or possibly cultural) bigotry to me.

Uh-huh. Right, 'cause immigration is the only way 'hispanics' could possibly be living in California, right?
Now, remind me again: who exactly are the immigrants?
