I had dinner with a couple of mathematicians last evening. We were talking about the state of the university. One of them asked this question:
What are the cheapest departments to run at a university? Well, the math department is the second cheapest department. All you need are pencils, pads of paper, and wastebaskets.
Of course, then, we wondered what is the cheapest department to run. The philosophy department, because they don't need any wastebaskets.

I think biological science departments are the cheapest overall, because they actually bring in money from research grants. When you say cheapest, do you mean lowest overall cost, or lowest net cost?

Maybe true 10 years ago, but now they're all embracing mass computations, which requires computers! I think doing Fourier Transformations isn't really possible without computers.
There's always one little snot like me who has to take the wind out of your sails..... :D

Political science?
You could run wind turbines using all the hot air.

Philosopher Yahweh takes personal offense to that... dick
Philosophy department is possibly the most energy efficient of the departments.
For instance, if a student believes there is a piece of paper and a pencil in front of him, then there is paper and pencil in front of him.
Or maybe a student believes his perception of reality can alter reality, well in that case while he's sleeping, he can be learning all the material he needs in his dreams. And since he imagined it, there's no way he wouldnt pass an exam. Philosophy 24/7 is the only way to go.
Maybe we have a transcendentalist on our hands, well he dont ever need to show up for class because he knows all the information anyway.
Or perhaps an actualist has decided to join the class. She flubs up horribly on a test, well there is always the possibility that she could have passed with flying colors, lo and behold she did.
I can go on and on, dont be "player hating" the Philosophy Department.

I did not mean to offend Philosopher Yahweh. Perhaps philosophers simply throw the bad stuff on the floor. This could be verified by looking on the floors of philosophy departments in France.
