View Full Version : I Love My Mouse - Do You Love Yours?

I have had some problems with mouses/mice recently and finally bit the bullet and invested in this:

Logitech MX Revolution (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/130&cl=gb,en)

http://forums.randi.org/imagehosting/thum_318046dc047b6da71.jpg (http://forums.randi.org/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=8092)

I had already purchased inexpensive mice but hated them all as they failed to be either precise or fast (when they worked).

The Revolution suits me perfectly and seems to be designed for exactly my hand shape (I know this will not apply to all). It is slick, fast and extremely comfortable for me and I delight in the Microgear precision scroll wheel. It goes into free-wheel for a fast scroll (like a loooong thread) and clicks back in to line-by-line scroll when you stop it...Just peachy. I haven't got it to float, like in their picture...but maybe soon :D

The decision to purchase was a long one and I toyed with other manipulation devices such as trackballs and graphic tablets. (I still have a niggling lust for the MX Air...Maybe when this one wears out). Graphic tablets interest me, but I wonder if they are practical for non-graphic use and if they would be worth the (considerable) expense? (I have a cheap one but it spends most of its time as an expensive mouse mat).

My recommendation, for anyone that used a mouse extensively, is do not opt for a cheap version, it was, in my case, much, much more expensive in the long run. A 2 minuted wiggle in a shop is insufficient to a assess their limitations.

Ramble over.

What is your favourite mouse?

Which ones have you hated?

Have you tried other types of device?

Issues resolved with unusual physical requirements i.e. no-hands, large or small hands, dexterity issues, left-handed etc... would be interesting.

Thanks.

I use the Kensington Track Ball and have been using them since I first started using Macs in 1993. Other companies make trackball mice, but the Kensington is the one ball for me. I can't imagine using anyone else's trackballs but Kensington's.

I've got the Logitech MX510 "gaming" mouse with the extra-fast scan rate and extra buttons.
First ran into the problem of a standard mouse being unable to cope with fast movement with "Morrowind"; often your character would seem to be staring at the ceiling and spinning. This took care of all that nicely.
The extra buttons are nice, but I find many games don't support them....

I have a similar Logitech with the programmable buttons. Love it. Great for web browsing because you have quick access to BACK and CLOSE functions.

The main beef I have with the ergonomic mice, is they are not offered for left handed mousers!

I forgot to mention.

Cordless and rechargable was important for me and the source of most of the problems I had with previous mice.

I understand the enthusiastic gamer will only use corded mice.

I haven't noticed my Revolution miss a pixel.....yet.

So, gamers...is it a must to "fly-by-wire"?

Aaaaarggggghhh! My IBM X-station 3 button mouse that I loaned to my wife (with a few others) for a demo she was doing. I never saw it again. Thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?

No but I'm a trackball user as well, my preference is the MS Trackball Explorer. Hate having to use a silly mouse.

Funny, you look like you'd enjoy playing with a mouse.

I use a Microsoft IntelliMouse; it's got left and right buttons, and a scroll wheel that you can also click/hold and move the mouse around to speed-scroll.

I have bought Logitech mice for the design but they have been nothing but trouble, I like Micro$oft mice with neutral design since I'm ambidextrous and like to alternate.

I use Razers. Very good quality and not expensive. They are for gamers but I like them for everything. The only downside is the extra buttons on the right-hand side - they are too far back and very difficult to reach.

I had an MX1000 for a long time that I loved, but in hindsight it was very heavy and charging it was a pain. It sat in this little cradle and if you didn't get it just right it wouldn't charge. Still, the button layout on it was the best I have come across.

I'm actually pretty anti-wireless for keyboards and mice. The whole battery thing is not my cup of tea.

Very nice mouse, H3LL. I used it for a week and liked the automatic switching between the ratchet-wheel and the fly-wheel. Ultimately, I returned it because it was way too big for my hand and rather heavy. I did, however, get the notebook version. It's not as fancy and you have to manually switch turn on/off the fly-wheel via a button underneath the mouse, but the good thing is that it fits perfectly in my hand.

Yeah, but after he’s dunked it in the killing bucket it’s no good.

I spend my life learning keyboard shortcuts so I can use the mouse as little as possible.

I use a standard Microsoft wireless optical mouse at home, and a wired version at work. The wireless is nice for gaming, as I don't have to mess with the cord (also, my box is on the floor fairly far from the monitor).

I've tried several mice, including some with the extra buttons, and I don't really care for those types. I use mouse gestures for web shortcuts, so that's not an issue, and I've never found the extra buttons to be all that helpful for gaming.

I've also tried a trackball a bit (didn't enjoy it, but I didn't use it enough to get used to it), and once had a laptop with that little touchpad and that stupid cursor nub in the middle of the keyboard. Can't say I liked the laptop touchpad or nub much, but I think that's something designed more for space reasons than ease of use.

This (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=086&active_tab=overview) mouse from Microsoft had the potential to be super ultra comfy for me (since my hand tends to naturally tilt in that direction). I ended up selling it to my roomate since it was was too big and tall, and forced me to "palm" the mouse, something I don't normally do. I really wanted to like this mouse. If they ever come out with a notebook version, I'll switch my Logitech VX Revolution for it in a second. I do, however, recommend it for you JREFers with big hands.

Hello, fellow Revolution user :D

I've had mine for about six months now, and it's a very good mouse. Lovely materials they've used for it. Very comfortable to use.

I agree that cheap mice are a false economy. I had a Trust wireless mouse before this one, and it was junk. Too light, too rattly, and it would pause for a fraction of a second when it moved before the pointer moved. Not enough to be unusable, but enough to be highly annoying. I replaced it within a month.

Before that I had a much-loved IntelliMouse explorer - one of the first ergonomically hump-shaped ones, dated 1999. Even though it went wonky in the end it still sits on my desk; I used it for so many years I can't bear to throw it out :D Now, that was an expensive mouse, but it took heavy use for eight years, which must make it good value! (So well used, in fact, that the Microsoft and laser logo wore off the back of it)

I have a silver plated mouse. :D

Of course I don't actually use it because it's massive and really horrible. Some people just have a strange sense of humour when it comes to presents.

I seem to actually be using some kind of bog-standard Logitech thingy. It has buttons and a wheel and a shiny red light on the bottom. I really can't see the point in anything more than that.

People still use mice? That's cute.

It's all about the tablet.

What is your favourite mouse?
What has that got to do with computers?
Which ones have you hated?
AFAIR, the forum rules specifically prohibit anyone from posting someone's home address and other personal details...
Have you tried other types of device?
Since there is stuff like Trackballs and Trackpoints, this thread should most definitely be marked as NSFW!
Issues resolved with unusual physical requirements i.e. no-hands, large or small hands, dexterity issues, left-handed etc... would be interesting.Well... yeah... sure they would! Still NSFW!

I always seemed to have more of a problem with dirt build-up in mice and trackballs that most people, so at work I'm currently using a Logitech MX500 optical mouse. It's virtually maintenance-free, and doesn't wear out mousepads (technically, a mousepad isn't needed, but I find it slides more smoothly on one of those slick-surfaces pads than on the desk surface).

At home, however, my needs are a bit different. My set-up doesn't allow enough movement room for a mouse, so I looked for a trackball solution and eventually found the Logitech Trackman Marble FX http://uva.jp/dh/mt/archives/images/MarbleFX.jpg It still collects a bit of dirt, but to clean, you need only tip the device over and the large "marble" (about 3 times the size of a trackball) falls out, allowing quick access to the dirt. No untwisting a retaining ring, then trying to pry dirt and fibers out of tiny roller wheels as with traditional mice. I've been using this device for years and I still like it. Initially, it takes a bit of getting used to as things are positioned a little differently. For example, the main (left-click) button is pressed with the thumb rather than the index finger, and the right button is down and below the ball and you hit it with your ring finger. However, it is very ergonomic and has loads of customizable button options. The marble is supported on three pins and moves over an optical sensor, so there are no rollers involved.
