View Full Version : Saturday night is our party night!

Girl 6
2nd September 2003, 08:49 AM
Hey people!

According to Linda's post on the thread with the tentative schedule (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26100), it looks like Saturday night is going to be our night to party together as a group.

Last time, we didn't plan for it. I'm not going to let this TAM2 pass by without a plan in place to party or get together as a group.

So, I open up the floor to suggestions on what we can do to exercise our right to PARTY! :D

Oh wait, we'll already be there. Hmmm . . . Let's see. . . .

I say we flash mob a casino floor and all pull the levers on slot machines at once.

After that I'm hitting the strip... bars. ;)

The Australian Connection have decided that we have to go to an Outback Steakhouse at least once, so maybe Saturday's the night for us to don our khaki shorts, yell "Crikey!" very loudly, and invite everyone to a BYO party.

Youse Yanks can grab the opportunity for some exotic Aussie tucker. We Aussies will be able to wonder at the bizarre misinterpretation of our culture.

Everyone find a psychic. Option one: Go as a group and everyone but the "customer" brings a recorder and notepads.

Option two: Go in one at a time and all give the same personal information. "Hi, I'm Terry Jones."

Ooooo... That looks cool, but unfortunately anyone sitting next to me will be deaf after I scream through the whole thing! LOL!

:D

Any other ideas? We can always just all get together and roam the strip in search of adventure. :)

I like the idea of seeking out a psychic, and then present the same information. We each take notes and compare them afterwards. Then, write a scathing exposé. Available on SkepticReport, of course... ;)

Also, do a flash mob in a casino (NOT the one where we are staying!), handing out flyers with "Why Do Psychics Never Win At The Casino?" and skeptical stuff like that...

On a more personal level, I would like a flying helmet, egg whisk, wet celery and a cuckoo clock. As well as the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies. I want to whisper "It is I...LeClerc!" to people passing by....and "Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once..."

I am soooo twisted....

And no, not if we all drop some coin and do a simulaneous pull at least once (then we can get our free drink and bug outta there).

The Flash Mob idea requires some organization in the form of someone printing flyers and so forth... Hmmmm...

We never really got an organized party together last time in part, because just a few more people showed than was expected. Things got pretty hectic pretty fast.
We'll get some sort of central meeting place to start our adventure, then cross our fingers. Remember trying to get just 11 of us pointed in the same direction for the Space Center trip?

Brown

I am all in favor of a party. But I have to say that I don't drink and I need my hearing, so if the end result is ending up in a bar with our conversation drowned out by loud music, then count me out.

On the other hand, there are a lot of evening sights to see that do not necessarily involve intoxication or potential hearing loss. The fountain show at the Bellagio springs to mind. The new show at Treasure Island (assuming it's up and running) might be fun to see as a group. A nighttime visit to Hoover Dam could be interesting. (My most recent visit to the dam was at night, and it was very impressive, almost surreal.)

We might try to take all of the seats at a low-stakes blackjack table at a casino (although that might be tough to do on a Saturday) and rely on each other's knowledge to play intelligently. I have done this with a group, and it is a lot of fun.

Zep
8th September 2003, 09:17 PM
If we are going to get loaded and then go on roller-coasters, this would be a great way to throw stale spew on the crowd below from 100 floors up (it takes a while to get all the way down, that's why it would be stale...look, let's just move along). So I don't think I would be up for that.

However the casino stuff or the psychic or the flash mob does sound our kinda style.

But this will be Vegas, so somewhere, somehow, there has to be (a) an all-night wedding chapel, (b) a drive-thru SOMETHING, and (c) Elvis impersonators involved.

Thinking, thinking...

There will be all those things. I am sure there are even Elvis impersonators who will marry you, but...Vegas marriages are legal, you know. So no matter how drunk you guys get, remember that! Some people are under impression they are not, and I heard several quite strange stories about that.

Brown, Hoover Dam at night sounds like an interesting plan. I contemplated borrowing a minivan, and I know some locals will be driving in to Vegas also. Perhaps we can get enough cars and interested folks for an excursion. Similarly, we can also go to Grand Canyon, but that is a much longer trip, and would require a day, if people are staying an extra day.

Renata, it will be the Zep's 20th wedding anniversary, so we probably WILL get married...again, and to each other (variations NOT envisaged).

Perhaps we could do this at 1am at a drive-thru chapel with Elvis impersonaters on the side...

(The Zeplette has just told me she wants NOTHING to do with this WHATSOEVER!)

You're right, Renata. That is just TOO weird to contemplate. But a drive-thru wedding! Now THAT'S different!

(...and I should reprise here that I loathe and abhor Elvis Presley, so if the Elvis impersonaters DO enter into the picture then I will be speaking my vows through clenched teeth)

Here's an idea. What other unusual drive-thru situations are there in Vegas? Perhaps a flash-mob could drive through it continuously in a loop. Or walk through in a loop (that's about our peverseness).

or look at the webpage at:
http://www.geocities.com/lvflashmob/

The strip is REALLY crowded Saturday nights.
Whenever I have friends in town, I always take them to the New York New York roller coaster, which I've been on about 30 times. The roller coaster on the Stratosphere is a waste of money, however, the other ride there, the BigShot, is a real thrill.
The hotel the Convention is at is located accross the street from "Restaurant Row", where there's a ton of great restaurants. Hamada, Mortons, McCormick and Schm...(well, I can't spell that one), and many other fine dining establishments.

Walking the strip at night on a weekend is always fun, but, it'll be pretty cool in January, so keep that in mind.

What else do you all have in mind? I know everything about Vegas, so if you have any ideas, I'll let you know what's fun and what's not.

I have many vices, in the majority of which I would most definitely intend to indulge were I attending. Unfortunately, my lord and master Cthulhu has denied my request for time off.

All is not lost, though. I will sing "Always on My Mind" promptly at midnight on the appropriate Saturday. (The Willie Nelson version, thank you very much; I am an Elvis fan, but that particular remake of his is not one of his better efforts.)

I will leave it to those of you in Vegas to decide if I will have had a drink beforehand at the time.

If the basic idea is for us to be able to party together as a group without a lot of distractions or disagreements, then partying in the lobby/lounge area or by the pool doesn't sound like a bad idea.
http://www.tuscanylasvegas.com/index.php?PID=AMENITIES

It isn't like this lounge is going to be something you would find at the Motel 6. The Tuscany looks to have a nice lounge area, pool, and casino. What more do you need? I know each hotel/casino is unique in some way, but when it comes down to it, they all have the basic necessities to give us what we need to party together.

Furthermore, I suggest that you start the party in the lobby/lounge area and then if there are those that wish to continue on somewhere else later in the night then so be it. I feel it will be difficult to have a large group come to an agreement about a place to party either way.

Let's use Ockham's razor here. "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate." Or as some like to interpret it: Keep it simple!

Ah yes, I forgot to consider the weather factor during Jan. in Vegas. But that would only be a problem outside by the pool, it wouldn't prevent us from using the hotel lounge. Although, I wouldn't mind feeling some cool air and being able to wear some cozy winter gear. I get spoiled living in FL year round. :D

I understand that Saturday night is a busy night for Vegas. There are likely to be crowds pretty much everywhere, and there is a good chance of getting separated.

Staying at the Tuscany sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Staying indoors also is probably a good idea (according to various web sites, the temperatures could be in the 40s or 50s Farenheit [4 to 16 Celsius]), and could possibly be colder.

Just throwing out a couple of ideas here: There are various party games that we could play. We could also have an informal educational session. I would be happy to teach juggling or magic tricks to anyone who is interested, and I would also be interested in learning some new good tricks. If anyone wants to learn how to play blackjack or craps intelligently, I can explain some basic strategy for those games, too.

- TWISTERRRR!! :D

- Seriously, I like the idea of staying near the Tuscany, whether it's in the lounge or perhaps a bar next door, altho the louge still sounds like the better option, given that not everybody drinks and enjoys loud music. Somehow I doubt it will be boring, even if the environment is quieter than a bar. From there, if a group wants to hit the (strip) clubs or a "bar" bar, they can launch from there.

- One thing we did do last time at the smaller FL hotel: on the opening night there was beer being sold, but at high prices. We snagged a 12-pack at the local store and brought it to the room in some ice and carried them down instead. Now in Vegas, I don't know how the prices will be, or if there will even be a convenience store close by, but it's something to keep in mind if you're planning to imbibe. No need to pay $8 a beer or something silly like that.

- I will communicate tonight with the IPU to ensure all of us arrive safely to and from!

I like most of the ideas being tossed around in here. I'm pretty flexible. I can have fun in a strip club, at the bars, hanging out in a casino, whatever.

So far, the idea appealing to me most is hanging out at the lounge at the start of the evening & using it as a launchpad for other events. It's inevitable that some people are going to want to do things others don't, so why force the issue? We can all meet up in the early evening, spend a while mingling, and then we can split up to raise hate & discontent throughout sin city.

I'm partial to the idea of hanging around somewhere in the hotel, possibly drinking in someone's rooom. We can talk then without worrying about trying to be heard over music or slot machines. Don't have to fight the crowds. Just do what we do here, but without the smilies. ;)

It's not hate and discontent, it's Fear and Loathing.
But I agree, different groups may wish to hit Wayne Newton for a while and agree to head back to the hotel.

speaking of quotes, Jeff, about Byron is it "he was mad, bad and dangerous to know." or what? I have a friend that is always saying that (perhaps about Wayne Newton?) and I wonder if she is getting it right.

I've been so trying to talk Pool Boy into a drive through Evlis ceremony then a JREF reception with 6 packs in someone's hotel room. Not going over well at all. I like the hotel room plan, after all, Vegas will always be there. But a gathering like this is only once a year.

Learning basic strategy for blackjack or craps sounds like an appropriate activity given the location. I would prefer if we could do it earlier in the week though, so those of us planning to use our newly learned gambling skills have a chance to do so.

Maybe Wed. or Thurs. night would be good. What does everyone think?

Who else can share their gambling strategy knowledge with the rest of us?

BTW - If you want to learn a fairly easy game with good odds, I suggest one of the many versions of Video Poker. (Jacks of Better, Dueces Wild, etc.) Using perfect stategy your return rate can be over 100% (on "'full pay" games).

True, true. The longer you play the more it favors the house. That's why they bring you free drinks. That and to get you drunk. But as Brown says, there are a few games that you can play and if you play perfect stategy the odds can be pretty good.

Also, casinos certainly don't go broke because very few people either know or care to know how to play perfect stategy. They come to Vegas expecting to LOSE.

I do know that when I went to Vegas for the first time in July, I spent the first 2 days looking at the pay schedules on the various Video Poker machines. I learned that the "full pay" machines are practically nonexistent in the big casinos on the strip. The best I could find were a few machines at Club Royale. I am hoping that since the Tuscany is not right on the strip the payout might be decent on their machines. We shall see.

Oh yeah....and if you want to play a game with the WORST odds. Play Keno. (The slots are bad too.)

They do have a few good Video Poker machines. They have very limited table games though. It's kind of a locals place. It's a very nice hotel, especially for those who don't like casinos. The casino is completely separate from everything else.:book:

It sounds like a good idea to start the evening hanging out around the hotel even if I cannot understand the demand for being indoors. :)
It will probably give all us newbies the opportunity to get to know some people before we explore the rest of Vegas.

Not all of us come from across the polar circle. Some of us feel cold even above -50°C.

Party is a good idea.
Indoor party is an even better idea.
Count me in.

What do you think about a PAJAMA PARTY!!!! :D

Okay... just putting this out there for public consumption.

This is shaping up to be quite the event. We will be having the infamous chocolate tasting event BEFORE the party. :)

I'm game.

Hey, I'm currently reading a book on massage. (ignoring the parts about Reki and reflexology) Maybe we can put what I learn to the test at the party. :)

That can be arranged. But can we keep it to, say, chess?

Well Kung Fu Fighting would be a good substitute, especially when you get to play the "You are no match for my Kung Fu" card which of course must be said out loud.

Or monster fighting in the dungeons of Munchkin. Or killing off your friend's bunnies in Killer Bunnies with assorted sick and twisted weapons, hee hee.

Sorry, I am a gamer :D

We never did the flash-mob thing after all. That sounded like a fun idea though ...

I'm totally in. The mrs. may even join us for a while, but she's historically an early to bed, late to rise kind of gal. Indoor is best, for sure. It gets chilly in the desert.

I can't wait to meet you all!
