$52,500 for this (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/20/AR2007082001554.html?nav=emailpage):

Some people apparantly have a lot more money than taste. :boggled: :nope:

Who made that? Katamari?

TM: You know some Japanese I see. The bag is The Louis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork.
It is indeed a Katamari, an agglomeration of this and that.

Functional cubism?

Someone explain why ANY purse would cost $52,000 much less a hideous one such as this.

Because there are some lucky bastards out there with more money than they know what to do with. They would never buy that bag if it was $50. But for $52K you may find a few buyers. Plus, everyone in their circle would know they have 52K to spend on a bag because it's so recognizable. "Oh look, she bought that $52,000 bag!". It's not about buying something because you think it's pretty or functional but it allows you to flaunt your wealth.

IMO, of course.

Snob appeal? The brand, artificial scarcity, and a keen insight insight into human vanity? Give the purveyors credit for being clever businesspeople. There is a growing population of 'superrich' people with net worths over $10 million and they need something to spend their money on.

Of course, it seems like actually carrying this purse around might be dangerous.

I can't speak for TM, maybe he does know Japanese, but you don't need to to come up with the word "Katamari" anymore. It's part of the name of a video game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katamari_Damacy) (where the objective is to roll a sticky ball around and pick stuff up into an ever-growing clump), and so has entered popular culture.

Yeah. It was, like, a joke. Because the handbag looked like it was a ball of junk.

I thought it was wickedly funny, with a cool reference to video gaming, which would assure the joke scored well with young people and geeks. Sadly, the joke did not survive its explanation, with graphics, and a sidebar into Japanese language studies. Further jokes of a similar sort will now be cancelled, and an exploratory group will begin consider jokes of a different kind for future use. Perhaps bringing back Aslan, or maybe knock knock jokes. We here at TragicMonkey Inc work hard to post piffle.

Aslan sez: Knock, knock.

I remember reading an article somewhere in which a fashion adviser suggested that spending less than four figures on a handbag would be unthinkable- like buying your toilet paper second-hand.

As someone else said, for people with more money than brains.

It's an expensive purse made out of other, smaller, expensive purses. How is that not hilariously awesome? I mean, if all you want is for your purse to be "pretty" you can find one at a discount store, so logically when you're going to spend tons of money on a purse, you need something more than mere aesthetic value, you need it to be silly. It's the turducken of luxury handbags.

Aesthetically, I really like it. But the price tag is dumb. If it was £100 without the silly LV branding I would buy it.

But which shoes would you wear with it?

Shoes made out of smaller shoes, obviously, although bowling shoes would probably work on a budget.

It's lines like these that make me love this place.

ETA: Grrrr...will look up how to add NSFW for real and edit again.
Further ETA: That did it.

That link reminded me of the monkey and dog head CD holders Borders has been trying to get rid of :covereyes. All they needed was red at the neck!

What the hell is a fashion advisor. Fashion to me is what every one else is doing. So this dude tells you how to copy other people. It's easier than being a learn-to-think-for-yourself advisor, I bet. Fashion adviser, can you put that down on a census form.

It's amazing what kinds of things people can do in a modern society to earn a living. Some people play video games for a living (gold farmers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_farming) for example).
Everything I do is on a computer (translation) and I could even work from home if I chose to. I think I would call myself a fashion consultant rather than a mere fashion advisor. :D

It's pretty obvious that some people have way too much money, and are constantly seeking ways to spend it.

I cannot imagine, even were I amazingly wealthy, spending money merely for the sake of spending money.

Once you've got your handbag, how about something to carry in it?
For all you booklovers with more money than you know what to do with (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6960911.stm)

No one spends money for the sake of spending money. It is for the sake of being seen spending money. It is conspicuous consumption after all not inconspicuous consumption.

Ugly, ugly, ugly... I think I just have like 3 handbags and they're all black. I don't even care if they "match" my shoes or not, fashion statements are stupid.

That's crazy! The point of accumulating vast wealth is to hoard it in secret. To heap piles of gold and jewels in your hidden cave, and go there to gloat over it. It enhances the pleasure if it's entirely secret, as well as having the benefit of being safer. Nobody will steal it from you, or bug you for handouts, if they don't know you're rich.

I think I saw those in the hospital gift shop that the kids frequent for their candy runs...

...only they were pink and purple and aimed at kids.

I don't like to criticize other people's choices regarding purchases because I don't like to have mine criticized.

I think it's even worse when people have neither money nor taste. No, really.
