Because there are some lucky bastards out there with more money than they know what to do with. They would never buy that bag if it was $50. But for $52K you may find a few buyers. Plus, everyone in their circle would know they have 52K to spend on a bag because it's so recognizable. "Oh look, she bought that $52,000 bag!". It's not about buying something because you think it's pretty or functional but it allows you to flaunt your wealth.

Snob appeal? The brand, artificial scarcity, and a keen insight insight into human vanity? Give the purveyors credit for being clever businesspeople. There is a growing population of 'superrich' people with net worths over $10 million and they need something to spend their money on.

Yeah. It was, like, a joke. Because the handbag looked like it was a ball of junk.

I thought it was wickedly funny, with a cool reference to video gaming, which would assure the joke scored well with young people and geeks. Sadly, the joke did not survive its explanation, with graphics, and a sidebar into Japanese language studies. Further jokes of a similar sort will now be cancelled, and an exploratory group will begin consider jokes of a different kind for future use. Perhaps bringing back Aslan, or maybe knock knock jokes. We here at TragicMonkey Inc work hard to post piffle.

I mean, if all you want is for your purse to be "pretty" you can find one at a discount store, so logically when you're going to spend tons of money on a purse, you need something more than mere aesthetic value, you need it to be silly. It's amazing what kinds of things people can do in a modern society to earn a living. Some people play video games for a living (gold farmers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_farming) for example).
Everything I do is on a computer (translation) and I could even work from home if I chose to. I think I would call myself a fashion consultant rather than a mere fashion advisor. :D
