Electric Monk
2nd September 2003, 11:23 PM
Dr. Victor Stenger (http://spot.colorado.edu/~vstenger/), Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Hawaii and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado, will be presenting two lectures in the L.A. area:
Sunday, Sept. 7th, 2pm - Has Science Found God?
In this lecture based on his new book, Dr. Stenger notes that a common view is that one cannot prove nor disprove the existence of God, but shows that it depends on the properties of the God you are talking about. The traditional properties of God of the monotheistic religions are incompatible with each other and inconsistent with objectively observable facts about the world. Such a God should have been detected by now. The fact that he has not been detected makes his existence unlikely to a high level of certainty.
Skeptics Lecture Series (http://www.skeptic.com/lectures.html) - Baxter Auditorium on the Caltech campus in Pasadena
$5 for Skeptics Society (http://www.skeptic.com) members, $8 for non-members
Discuss the lecture with a bunch of skeptics afterward at the fabulous Buger Continental restaurant.
Directions: Off the 210 freeway exit Lake Ave. south, left on Del Mar, right on Michigan,
park in the faculty parking lot.
For further information contact the Skeptics Society at 626.794.3119
Sunday, Sept. 14th, 11am - Where Do the Laws of Physics Come From? (Bring Franko, win a prize :D )
No official description yet, but it sounds like it will be based on his upcoming book, The Comprehensible Cosmos (http://spot.colorado.edu/~vstenger/nothing.html). (See link for draft chapters.) In it, Dr. Stenger argues that the laws of physics are the simplest possible rules by which anything can exist, based on symmetry and spontaneous (uncaused) symmetry breaking. (This is my understanding of his argument, not his own summary.)
Center for Inquiry - West (http://www.cfiwest.org) - Steve Allen Theater in the CFI-West building in Hollywood
Free for Friends of the Center, $5 for .. errmmm .. enemies?
Address: 4773 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90027
Phone: (323) 666-9797
For Orange County dwellers, the lecture will be repeated at 4:30 pm in the Costa Mesa Community Center
1845 Park Ave, Costa Mesa
Wednesday, September 10, 2003, 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm - The Great Debate: Is There a God?
A Scientist and a Philosopher Speak Out
* Victor J. Stenger, Ph.D.
* William Lane Craig, Ph.D., Th.D.
Campus Center Ballroom - University of Hawaii at Manoa
Free Admission (Airfare and accommodations not included.)
More Information (http://www.thegreatdebatehawaii.com/)
I'm planning to be at both lectures, (don't think I can make it to Hawaii), most likely wearing my TAM 2003 t-shirt, if anyone wants to find me. :)
