During Labor Day dinner when I was visiting my folks, my mom mentioned that some woman gave a talk to her discussion group recently.

You know the one: There was once a 'golden age' where men and women were equal, and then men took power, and relegated women to a subordinate roles, kicked them out of the church, started fighting wars with each other, the goddess, blah, blah, blah, etc.

Well, I recognized it for what it was, and proceeded to tear it apart logically. However, I think others have done a much better job of it.

Was there an article in Skeptical Inquirer that covered this? I have a load of back issues, but I don't know which one it might be in.

Also: any web links? I'm sure I've read a link in this forum before that was pretty good, but can't remember what it was.

This rather common in women's literature in the neo pagan movemen, try a search on 'farefaria', it is also a subtext in the Cross and the..., arghh I can't remember.

According to some anthroplogists, it is the invention of storage technologies and agriculture that leads to economic disparity.

Yes, life was good when we had magic, but then science came along and ruined everything.

There's very little real evidence for peaceful matriarchal stone age and it seems that it is based mostly on wishful thinking. You could try http://www.theatlantic.com/cgi-bin/o/issues/2001/01/allen.htm as a starting point.

A lot of valuable rebuttal information for this sort of thing, but some of it goes a bit overboard for my tastes.
