Working as I do at the Computer Help Desk at the local Major Midwestern College of Higher Knowledge, I get to be privy to lots of interesting happenings. The stories of who did what to their computer (I got the first 'beverage in the laptop' call this year about four hours after school officially opened), how badly they've screwed up their configurations, how many viruses can be on a computer at once, will be the source of much hilarity at the annual Help Desk BBQ.
Today, I rolled in and plonked the ol' backpack on the counter, and my supervisor said I'd be interested in the day's happenings, as she slid a sheaf of papers over to me.
Hmmm...MPAA...unauthorized distribution...peer-to-peer...this is a no-no...here's who did it...please smack 'em upside the head...wow...
Seems as one of our fine upstanding undergraduates has been doing a little illegal file sharing (movies, in this case), and got caught at it. The MPAA got into the act, and said undergraduate has had their network access blocked, with all sorts of electronic flags set to spring up all over the place if they come up for air on the system again.
The Major Midwestern College of Higher Knowledge evidently takes this here stuff very seriously, as they are cooperating to the fullest in this. The individual's network access is blocked, they're actively seeking them physically, and there's all sorts of very strongly implied penalties for failure to cooperate in this little venture.
I got a buck says this is gonna get publicized all over campus, and is gonna be the cause celebre of the on-campus geek community for quite some time...me, I'll stick with Minesweeper...
