Wow, I haven't paid this much attention to the Emmys in a while:

"If the mothers ruled the world, there would be no g--damned wars in the first place," said Field, trying to recover her train of thought while accepting an Emmy for her performance in "Brothers & Sisters." The offending word was bleeped for national airing.

I thought the correct use of bleep would making it ".. no g(bleeep!)d wars"

Or is damned without the god in front not such a bad word?

"Damned" is ok. Put the "god" in front, then Moses gets upset.

Would have been funnier if she'd told Jesus to suck it.

Then Jerry Falwell would be upset. Jerry, Moses, Jerry, Moses -- tough choice. Just remember, though, when Moses gets mad, he smacks you with those stone tablets. Choose carefully.

Just another form of religious persecution. They've taken God out of our courtrooms and schools, and now they're taking God out of our television shows. Just another form of the heathenism that is present day America. If people can't hear God's name on TV, how will they know they difference between right and wrong? Society will crumble!

It's been like that for a while. You can say "damned", but not "god damned", and the god gets bleeped. You can say "ass" but not "*******"[1], and the "hole" gets bleeped.

[1] and, apparently, neither can I.

The LA Times says (http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2007/09/the-emmys-reall.html):
Technically, Field's censored words are not profane. A 2004 FCC ruling specifically stated no objection to the use of "god damn" on TV when making a judgment on the uproar over Bono swearing at the Golden Globes in 2003 where he used more colorful language. See the ruling — CLICK HERE (http://www.fcc.gov/eb/Orders/2004/FCC-04-43A1.html)

Fox erring on the side of caution? Or did they not want Moses mad? Hard telling, but I guess on this one it's probably not the FCC's fault.

I agree :D
But she lacks that irreverent comic finesse--

goddamn wars....Jesus can suck it!

FFRF.Org is going nation and they have griffin's award speech and commentary.

The "uproar" (lol) wasn't that they bleeped out "god damn" ... it's that fox decided to cut her mic off completely for nearly 6 seconds and changed the camera view during that time. When I watched it last night I thought my DVR Cable Box was acting screwy, lol. They shouldn't have cut out anything in my book. If fox didn't cut/bleep anything out, Sally Fields wouldn't be on you-tube now and this thread wouldn't exist! ;)

"If the mothers ruled the world, there would be no g--damned wars in the first place," said Field...My first reaction to that train of thought would be to mention the following three names: Indira Ghandi, Golda Meir, and Margaret Thatcher.

I suspect the world would not be the utopia Field thinks it would be, international affairs and pressures being what they are.

It's not so bad. And it's easy. Beavers can do damned without the god in front.

Spot on Corsair! It was looking like everyone was concentrating on the very mild blasphamy and missing the rubbish about "peace abiding mothers in power".

Yes, they cut at the expletive to a darkened house with an empty stage, and remained on that shot until after the initial roar of approval had died down to a simple ovation.

Not just the "god" part, but the whole statement criticizing war including the audience's reaction?

Not that I don't think her statement wasn't banal and, well, wrong, but to cut it entirely?

Spot on Corsair! It was looking like everyone was concentrating on the very mild blasphamy and missing the rubbish about "peace abiding mothers in power".It was the first thing that popped into my mind when I heard about the story.

I already knew about U.S. broadcasters' tendancy to censor out the "God" part of "God damn" from having seen movies aired on U.S. networks where such censoring took place. I find the choice a curious one, but then in Canada, I've seen "f**ker" run unedited but "motherf**ker" censored to remove the "mother" part of the word. At least before 9 or 10 p.m. at any rate.

It's a cultural anachronism that taking ***'s name in vain is obscene.

I propose we bleep out all mentions of *** everywhere, not just
when we supposedly show disrespect to him. In fact, Bleep could be the new name for ***.

Actually beavers, at least the ones I saw at Castorville in Bois-des-Fillion in c1956, may not spell but they do smell rather bad.

Wait. This is not the Interesting Facts thread? Sorry.

Yep.

Queen Victoria had 9 kiddies: Crimean War, Boer War, Boxer Rebellion...

Catherine the Great had kiddies: War all over the place. Conquered, annexed, got Russia a lot of its current-day territory...

Just like the dudes! Yay!
