OMAHA (CN) – State Sen. Ernie Chambers has sued God, seeking an injunction to stop the deity from making, and delivering on, terroristic threats.

Chambers claims that God “has made admissions against Defendant’s own interests to various handpicked, trusted chroniclers of yore regarding … calamitous catastrophes resulting in the widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants, including innocent babes”. He adds: “Defendant has directed said chroniclers to assemble and disseminate in written form, said admissions, throughout the Earth in order to inspire fear, dread, anxiety, terror and uncertainty, in order to coerce obedience to Defendant’s will. Defendant has manifested neither compassion nor remorse, proclaiming that Defendant ‘will laugh’ when calamity comes.” Chambers demands a permanent injunction – or at least a hearing. Nebraska’s new term limits law prohibits Chambers from running for re-election in 2008.

An atheist coming out of the closet and going out with a bang? Or a complete nutter?

OK, it's a state senator. For a moment, I was worried.

I'm not sure what this is. The guy wouldn't be the longest-serving senator in Nebraska if people didn't know and like him. And in Nebraska that has got to mean that people at least have been led to believe he's religious.

Incidentally, there's a pretty good history of jurisprudence in US courts that says that they do not have jurisdiction over God.

He certainly wouldn't be the first to merely lead people to that conclusion in order to get elected.
