Has Carter ever described what he saw as a spaceship, alien vehicle, paranormal phenomenon or anything like this? He saw something, he could not identify it, therefore it was technically a UFO. Out of fairness to President Carter, I'd like to clarify this point.
I myself have seen a UFO. I saw something very unusual in the sky at night that I could not identify. That's a far cry from jumping to the conclusion that it was an alien spaceship - a conclusion that's very far down on my list of possible explanations.

The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe had a recent interview with the man himself, having him state exactly what it was he thought he saw. Sorry, can't search for the link at the moment.

Jimmy saw the "UFO" in the exact location Venus was that evening. If he saw a UFO, he missed seeing Venus. :boggled:

Thank you Alphaniner for directing me to the interview. President Carter confirms that he saw something in the sky he couldn't identify, and that he is familiar with Venus and the other planets and he's sure it wasn't Venus. He also says he doesn't believe we have been visited by extraterristerrials. He mentions that there was an Air Force base nearby, and he and the other witnesses assumed they were seeing something from the base, but they didn't know what it was.
So, I say we give the guy a break on this one.
I was much more disturbed to hear him talk about the CIA Chief using a psychic from California to locate a small plane that had gone down in Aftrica.

If "he's sure it wasn't Venus", why did he not see Venus when it was low on the horizon at the time and in the direction he was looking?

You'll have to ask him about that. :) From his description, it does sound a lot like Venus. I am also very familiar with Venus, and yet I have been surprised sometimes by how large and strange it can look.
