View Full Version : Any skeptics up near Traverse City, Michigan?

I recently moved to Traverse City, Michigan and have been shocked at the number of people who subscribe to creationism or new-age beliefs.
I want to start a freethought group to encourage rational thought. Does anyone know of any skeptics up near Traverse City?
Any advice on how to start a freethought/skeptic group?

Sorry. I only know Traverse City from my brief visits as a participant in the Cherry Festival Drum & Bugle Corps competitions in the early 1990s.

Northern Michigan isn't a hotbed of skepticism and freethinking...
But, they have some good vineyards there! ;-)

Tell Martha Teichner hi if she ever swings back through town.
I lived on K.I. Sawyer back in the day so I have an ear for the UP and I honestly don't recall a single person saying they were a Youper.

So they still run the boat race that used to be called the Northport 500? (Changed to Traverse City 500 I think)?
I hear Bellows Island is for sale for cheap, you could start a freethought meeting there in the house on that island if it is still standing. Just watch out for gull poop. ;)
Were I still in the area, I would happily help out. Though PM me, next timer I am visiting my mother's place on the Peninsula I'll drop by for a brew.

I stand corrected, though, in my defense, the location threw me off the personal history.

It depends on what you mean by near. Southern California is near to Traverse City, compared to the galactic core...
But really, no. Even if everywhere is walking distance, if you have the time...

Isn't that near Lansing?

I lived up there for two years. I spent most of my spare time in the civic theater, where you'll find new agers instead of creationists if you are in the mood for a change...

I'm in Ann Arbor, but occasionally make the trip up (crystal mountain and Frankfort). I have a friend (born again christian) who works at a christian book store (in the cherryland mall, I think), who is willing to have deep discussions without resorting to the "goddidit" argument. So there is life, and good wine, and gambling! (and fudge):D

We should put together a Michigan get together... I did this with Diesel, Flatworm (Dave), and a couple other locals about 5 years ago with some success. We all met at Four Greenfields on Royal Oak...

It has been quite a while since that meeting.
Still living in Westland, but traveling a lot.
Never really knew about the beliefs of folks around Traverse City. Cadillac had a large 7th day adventist community. I recall seeing one of their buildings with a large sign that said "apocalypse now" on it when I was up that way for a canoe trip. I guess they are expecting the end there any day now. Maybe if Imrational places him/herself directly between Cadillac and Traverse City the two elements will balance each other out?

If you Michiganders plan one in the summer and hold it on Mackinack Island - I'm there.
