Ok, I have a question about the bookmarks in Mozilla. I just got on the internet for the first time today and for some odd reason all of my saved bookmarks are gone. This isn't the first time this has happened to me. It's happened once before and I have no idea why. The only person who has touched my laptop besides me is my niece and I was sitting next to her the whole time, and all she did was check her email. Does anyone have any idea why it's erasing my bookmarks and does anyone know if I can get them back at all?

I have been using Mozilla (Netscape, Firefox , Seamonkey) for years and have never experienced that problem. Even upgrading from one version to another it remembers your old bookmarks and will bring over the ones from IE.

Maybe a complete uninstall and re-install?

I'm not sure why it happens, but it has happened once to me as well, for no apparent reason. Just - blam! no bookmarks.

The good news is that Mozilla backs up bookmarks. Since the exact location name is specific to your computer and profiles the easiest way to find them is to do a windows search for "bookmark" on your hard drive, and you'll find both your current default bookmark file in the profile folder deep in the documents and settings, and the backups in a directory below that.

You can use Windows Explorer to delete the current, empty "bookmarks.htm" and copy one of the backups into its place, whereupon you rename it "bookmarks.htm" and you're back in business.

by the way, there is a Mozilla extension that also allows you to store a copy of your bookmarks on box.net, which is a free file repository. Very handy, not only for backing up, but it gives you access to your bookmarks from other computers.

Your Mozilla bookmarks are kept as a local web page - an XML file, I think. It may be that file is getting cleaned up, or hidden in some way.

Did you reinstall mozilla and accidentally delete your profile?

Be sure to check where your boomarks backups exist, then go to boomarks > organize bookmarks > import > import from file, find the file , import, restart.

Just for reference, mine can be found here:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*.default\bookmarks. html

And yes, I've had a similar problem (many times it fixed itself after reboot, perhaps it used a temporary profile?)

Ok, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. That didn't work. I also tried a search for bookmarks and nothing came up. It may help if I had let you know that I use windows vista.

I don't think Vista is the problem. I have a vista machine and Firefox works fine. I did a quick search and found this article. Might give some tips. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

It may help if I had let you know that I use windows vista.Make sure you start your search in the right place. I haven't looked at Vista, but Windows will, by default, set your search path at the directory you're in at the time. If you start it at C:\ it should find what you need. Or just use Windows explorer to navigate to the folder Norwegian Squirrel mentioned, and look for it there.
