Okay, fess up, who here planted this idea in the MM? I'd love to hear Dr. Roseann O'Donnell, Ph.D., P.E., Hom.M.ASCE's take on this.

Where's all the dust? I would expect to see dust covering anything and everything surrounding the crash..
Also, these jokers think they're going to get everything cleaned up in a matter of days or weeks? Someone forgot to tell them that it will take months for everything to stop burning!
(see, comparing the two events works both ways!)

This crash has been the biggest pain in the butt. Until today they had completely closed off the biggest n/s road in and out of LA. And it's funny how we see incident after incident where fire causes structural problems, yet the Wooers keep claiming its impossible to happen in the WTC. Was the WTC made of magic?

Tell me about it. I missed a flight from LAX to Detroit on Saturday because of the traffic chaos.
Interestingly, I recall the radio commentary reporting that people said the heating of the rebar was causing 'explosions' in the concrete.
Must've been bombs.....

And gasoline does not burn as hot as jet fuel.

This was a truck bypass tunnel. 30 Semi's involved and only one car. It was primarily a diesel fire and truck parts.

People also reported the collisions as being like bombs went off. Clearly another conspiracy theory here too. Maybe Zen can tell us if he thinks bombs were planted in the tunnel.

I remember a horrific fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel under the Alps was mainly fuelled by, of all things, margarine. Got hot enough to effectively weld bits of metal together apparently.

exactly, so I think the truthers should just SHUT UP when it comes to comparing what DID happen to what THEY THINK SHOULD have happened!!!!

TAM:)A very good analysis of tunnel fires (the Austrian Taune (IIRC) Tunnel involve a BLEVE)- and note the date the report was issued.

"State Transportation Department district director Doug Failing said officials were trying to determine the extent of the damage to the steel and concrete tunnel. The fire burned so intensely that it melted concrete and caused reinforced steel bars to pull "
ZOMG, Rebar!!! Pull!!!

I don't think the point of the OP was to compare two events, it's to prove that fire can in fact, weaken steel.

Wrong! He's trying to convince us that allowing the Mexican truckers free run of the country is a good idea because ours keep taking out bridges and tunnels.

when I looked for it. there was a whole load of others but I was also trying to find one with the phrase Pull or espescially Pull it in for an attempt at humour

Well, no. It doesn’t work both ways. The analogy in the original post is valid. Your analogy, on the other hand, is not.

I've been using this analogy for a while now. Bridges are another structure that are readily knocked out in fires.
