And I remember when I was a cynical youth telling people that the Falkland War (or not war) was all about the oil people used to laugh at me! ;)

About time we got back what is rightfully ours. Alphabetical is also a good way to go. Antarctica. So what is next ? Australia ?

Oh Britain is not alone. The article says that.
Darat- BP actually had completed test drilling operations around the Falklands before the Argentinian invasion. The technology to recover oil from those waters didn't exist then . It does now. Also, given the distance to European markets, it was not economically viable then. It is now.

Which is why it was so important that we regain sovereignty of South Georgia the Falklands...

Questions:
What makes you think they stopped?
Did you stop being cynical as you aged? FWIW, I found myself becoming more cynical as age increased.
The UK preserving its future interests is a prudent course, given the inconsistent application of various internaitonal agreements.
For the Americans: how does this square with the Monroe Doctrine?

Given the inconsistent implementation of the Monroe Doctrine (in exchange for a few missles going away the USA allowed the Soviets to keep their puppet state in play) I'm sure the State Department can get over the UK grinding Port Stanley under its heel.

Ooh, I hope our government doesn't follow up on this and extends our claim as well. I'd be embarassed.
Then again I agree with the policy of hanging on to Svalbard with an iron fist.:D

LOL!
Do it quickly, will you? It's starting to get cold here (record early snowfall) and I hate the cold.

Lucky you....you seem to have regrown some spine.
Meanwhile, our left here in America is desperately trying to give away our coastlines to the UN so that no eeevvviiillll US (only) American oil company can drill for eeeevvviiiilll oil and gas offshore.
We already can't drill for in in the interior...why not go whole hog?

This was covered at the time, actually. The US claimed the Monroe Doctrine just applied to new territory, not territory already held.
As for Antarctica, that's not part of the New World, i.e. the continents of North and South America. It's its own continent. However, I did think it was already covered by UN agreements.
