Microsoft Admits New Windows Problem

WASHINGTON - Just moments before a top Microsoft executive told Congress about efforts to improve security, the company warned customers Wednesday of serious new flaws that leave its flagship Windows software vulnerable to Internet attacks remarkably similar to the Blaster virus that infected hundreds of millions of computers last month.

Computer users who applied an earlier patch in July to protect themselves still must install the new patch from Microsoft. "They're as close as you can be without being the same," said Marc Maiffret, an executive at eEye Digital Security Inc. of Aliso Viejo, Calif.
So the July patch for Blaster wasn't much of a patch, then, was it?

It would have been, if people had actually downloaded it.

A patch for blaster was available in July, blaster hit in late August. Had people kept up with the patches it wouldn't even had merited a page 29 blurb.

Care to bet when somone makes a proof of concept code for this bug, and a virus gets written (3 months from now) that people will be screaming about poor Microsoft security?
