"Praise the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; we have lucked out much more than we deserve," said Bill Lange, a scientist who led the service. "Dear Lord, thank you for sparing us again and thank you for helping all the people who needed the help."

I wonder what god had against all those people who didn't survive? Guess they were the wrong religion, they think 6 of the people who burned up were immigrants from Mexico, guess they weren't important enough to count.

I wish that if I was interviewed after a "act of god" I would have the clearness of mind to thank the people who really did something to help. I would love to point out that this god everyone is thanking also allowed many more to die horrible deaths for no reason. But I would bet that part would be cut out and the reporter would move on to the next person, (while deleting my interview).

I just noticed that the prayer was led by a scientist.

That would be a Christian Scientist I suspect?

Well, just goes to show you that even people who are presumably smart and rational aren't immune :(

Yes, this makes me sick. It does imply that God was punishing those who lost their homes for something, and that's just wrong

With all due respect, I don't think we need a new thread every time someone does this. A single 'Why do victims thank God instead of rescue workers' thread should do just fine.

I've got to ask you, since you're a neighbour. Do you ever see Norwegians do this thing, mentioned in the OP, on Norwegian news after some disaster has happened? I can't remember ever having seen someone sputtering out things like this on Swedish news  It seems to me, sometimes, that it could be a cultural thing as well as a religious thing, if that makes any sense?

If you don't thank god, he comes back later and finishes the job.
That's why, sooner or later, these people thanking god all die.

Yeah. think about that over your Weetabix tomorrow.

The link in the OP has already rolled over to a new story. Can I assume that the news article was covering the Sunday services of the church that had burned in Malibu the previous week? Reminded me of the "Is God Punishing California?" thread -- maybe the question to ask is, "Is Allah Punishing Christians?"

That's a big problem. Often times people praise God for favoring them over the other guy (the people who weren't rescued, who lost the basketball game, who didn't win best new album at The Grammy Awards, who didn't win the lottery) What did those other people do wrong?
