I was watched Criss Angel in Larry King Live on October 30, 2007, 11:00 pm CST. Criss Angel, the magician/Illusionist seemed to be very rational, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. He is a great fan of James Randi too. On the other hand he believes in the existance of god or God. I wonder, how some very smart, rational people think that there is enough evidence for the existance of god.
If you have seen his interview on Larry King Live or read about Criss Angel's view I would like to hear your opinion about his conclusion on god.
thanks.

You wouldn't be trying an argument from authority, now, would you?

For those of us who haven't seen the King/Angel interview--could you tell us what Angel's argument was for the existence of god?

I think it's perfectly possible for someone to be rational in most ways, but abandon rationality when it comes to belief in God. In fact, I think most humans have a bare minimum of rationality, or they wouldn't be able to function or survive. I think it's unfortunate when a rational person mistakenly thinks that it is in any way rational to believe in God, but I don't mind when someone consciously says, "here's one area where I don't want to be rational - I believe in God."
Not for me, but fine for others.
But I do hope this isn't meant to be some sort of argument from authority. Just because an ordinarily rational person believes in God doesn't mean that that belief is rational. If I, ordinarily a pescetarian, have some turkey this thanksgiving, does that make turkey a type of plant or fish? No, it does not.

Billions of smart, rational people believe in the existence of a God. Atheists have noticed this, and have a surprisingly good handle on where this belief comes from. I'm not sure why you'd pick Criss Angel. He's superb showman and a good magician, but he's hardly known as a beacon of philosophical thought.

Newton comes to mind.
I guess some see god(s) as the ultimate in rationality, after all, their god(s) did create all that is typicaly, and it makes sense to study their creation via science.

I once asked a doctor, who I greatly respect,if she believed in god.She said yes she did and I am still a bit bewilldered.
I dont know why but I really cant understand how intelligent people can believe in god.I am not saying you have to be stupid to believe in god but if you think about it logically how can you believe in a superior being magically ruling our world.

It's human nature. Some studies have even shown the possibility of a "god gene." A great many intelligent people believe in god, including folks who are otherwise skeptical and good at critical thinking.

It is also worth noting that such people are usually able to separate the genuine philosphical grey areas from the obvious bullsh-- and are thus not nearly as much of a threat as the rest. This is shown by the fact that more often than not the religious authorities consider them heretical lol.

#1) There are smart people who believe in god(s)
#2) There are total morons who don't believe in god(s)
#3) You are assuming that his answers were genuine and that he wasn't simply acting as a showman and saying what he knew is target audience wanted to hear....

Getting paid sounds pretty rational to me.
