On the night before the anniversary of September 11, residents in south Minneapolis and Bloomington (home of the Mall of America) were frightened by a series of explosions. According to the Star Tribune, (http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4091208.html) the explosions were from a from a pyrotechnics show over Lake Normandale. The explosions wer caused by fireworks.

The police and the local media received quite a few calls from people who were concerned about the noise.

Now, before we all have a good laugh, ask yourself how you would react if you were watching an image of that jackass bin Laden on your television and listening to his crazy threats, when all of a sudden you heard a bunch of explosions.

Same way I felt when that jackass Orson Welles put on that phony broadcast about the Martians attacking. What was the name of the author of that story? Oh Wells...

I'm sympathetic, but not entirely so.

For one thing, I don't think the terrorists would use a day where virtually the entire nation will either have the events of 9/11 on their mind or be operating with a sense of hightened security to conduct an attack.

Another thing I wondered, that the article answered, was was the city notified - and apparently they were. I assume from this that people who heard the fireworks were outside of the area of the display and the notified residents. I'm all in favor of being "on edge," but hearing fireworks, possibly miles away, and immediately calling 911 without some investigation borders on hysteria.

My only real criticism however would be for the pyrotechnic manufacturers for scheduling a.) their conference so close to 9/11 and b.) a pyrotechnic demonstration so close to 9/11. Come on guys, get with the program will you...
